Wang Junguang stuns Prajanchai on split decision at Lumpinee as Rhenimi knocks out Lamsing in Bangkok

China's Wang Junguang beat ONE Muay Thai champion Prajanchai in a kickboxing upset at Lumpinee, while Abdessamie Rhenimi stopped Lamsing with a third-round knockout.

China's Wang Junguang marked his return to ONE Championship with a major upset, beating reigning ONE strawweight Muay Thai world champion Prajanchai by split decision in a strawweight kickboxing bout at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok on Friday, 16 October. On the same night, 20-year-old Moroccan Abdessamie Rhenimi headlined ONE Friday Fights 175 with a crushing third-round knockout of Thai veteran Lamsing. This follows on from the fight-weekend preview of ONE's Tokyo card and UFC Edmonton, and covers a separate Bangkok event the night before.

Wang spoils Prajanchai's kickboxing return

The main event of The Inner Circle 35 was billed as a kickboxing homecoming for Prajanchai, a former two-sport champion who still holds the ONE strawweight Muay Thai title. Instead it belonged to Wang, a former ONE strawweight kickboxing title challenger who had been away from the promotion for six years.

Wang set the pace from the opening bell, using lead-leg teeps to push the Thai star towards the ropes. Prajanchai responded with doubled-up jabs and hard left kicks to the body, and in the middle round he stepped inside with hooks and uppercuts after Wang had found a home for an overhand right. The final round was close and physical, with Wang landing heavy body shots and knees while Prajanchai kept pressing forward with straight punches until the bell. Two of the three judges gave the fight to Wang.

The result, according to ONE, puts the 31-year-old Chinese fighter in the conversation for a shot at reigning ONE strawweight kickboxing world champion Jonathan Di Bella.

Rhenimi's uppercut ends Lamsing's run

In the Friday Fights headliner, a flyweight Muay Thai contest, Rhenimi ended a two-fight losing run in emphatic style. The Petchsaman Gym fighter knocked Lamsing down for good at 1:49 of round three, finishing a hook combination with a looping uppercut.

Lamsing had arrived on a three-fight winning streak and was chasing a US$100,000 ONE contract, so the defeat is a setback for one of the Lumpinee regulars hoping to move up to the main roster. For Rhenimi, it was the ninth professional win of his career.

Ghazali settles the score with Paez

The co-main event of The Inner Circle 35 was a flyweight Muay Thai rematch between Johan Ghazali and Diego Paez, after Paez had won their first meeting on a split decision at ONE Fight Night 32. This time Ghazali took a unanimous decision over three rounds, working behind a tight guard with jabs and body kicks early, landing heavy overhand rights in the second and holding off Paez's clinch attempts in the third.

A busy weekend for ONE

The Bangkok double-header was followed less than 24 hours later by ONE's next card at Ariake Arena in Tokyo on Saturday, 17 October. Because Bangkok is one hour behind Malaysia, Lumpinee cards broadcast in Asian prime time are easy viewing for fans in Malaysia, and ONE streams its events on its own platforms, with The Inner Circle shown to subscribers on live.onefc.com.
