Aapo "The Angus" Rautio retained the Air Guitar World Championship in Oulu, Finland on Friday 29 August, scoring 34.8 to hold off Nanami "Seven Seas" Nagura of Japan on 34.4. The margin was four tenths of a point.
It is his second consecutive title. His first, in 2025, ended a drought for the host nation that had run since 2000 — an awkward statistic for a country that invented the event and stages it every year.
The championships were founded in Oulu in 1996, which made the 2026 edition the thirtieth. The final was staged on the Delta Life stage in Pokkisenpuisto park on the closing night of a programme that ran from 25 to 29 August, with around 5,000 people on site and tens of thousands more watching the stream. Thirteen countries were represented in the final field, drawn from roughly fifty competitors overall; the top eight came from Finland, Japan, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Brazil and Taiwan.
The rules are stricter than the premise suggests. Routines last 60 seconds. In the earlier rounds each competitor performs one track of their own choosing and one assigned by the organisers, which removes the advantage of a heavily rehearsed single act. No real instruments are permitted and no backing band. A five-person jury drawn from the performing arts scores stage presence, originality, technical skill, artistic impression and "airness" — the event's own term for the quality of a performance that stops being an imitation of guitar playing and becomes its own thing.
The 2026 edition sat inside a larger civic project. Oulu is European Capital of Culture for 2026, and the championships were programmed as part of it, which is a reasonable measure of how far an event founded as a joke at a music festival has travelled.
One minor discrepancy is worth noting for anyone citing the date: the organisers' own announcement is dated 29 August, while some secondary coverage puts the final on the 30th. The official post is the one to follow.
