VCT China Threshold: Dragon Ranger Gaming knock FunPlus Phoenix into Week 2 as Shanghai semi-finals loom
Dragon Ranger Gaming beat FunPlus Phoenix 2-1 in the VCT China Threshold Week 1 quarter-finals in Shanghai. The winners earn a 2027 VCT China visitor spot.
Valorant's Chinese scene has its own promotion fight going on while the rest of the world is in the off-season. On Friday, 23 October, Dragon Ranger Gaming beat FunPlus Phoenix 2-1 in the Week 1 quarter-finals of the VCT China Threshold at THE HUB Performing Arts Center in Shanghai. FPX now go into the second week of the event and still have a chance of earning a place in VCT China 2027.
What is the Threshold?
The Threshold replaces the Ascension system in China and is the last event of China's national season. It offers two places in VCT China for 2027 as visiting teams.
Under the 2027 format, VCT China has 12 teams in each event. Eight are partner organisations, two are visiting teams from the Threshold, and two qualify through the China National Tournament (VCNT). That makes the Threshold the main route into the top level for teams that are not partners.
Format: two weeks, two tickets
The Threshold runs from 21 October to 1 November. In Week 1, five VCT China 2026 teams and seven national teams play a single-elimination bracket. The Week 1 winner qualifies. Every other team goes into Week 2, also single elimination, together with one more national team. All series are best-of-three apart from the grand final, which is best-of-five.
So FPX's loss does not end their event, but they now have to win in Week 2.
