CS2 Rush Hour Update: 3v3 Rush Mode, Silent Reloads and Premier Map Changes

Valve's Rush Hour update adds a 3v3 Rush mode, silent reloads and a new Premier map pick system, with three quick fix patches following within days.

Counter-Strike 2 players have had a lot to learn this week. Valve's "Rush Hour" update, released on 22 September, brought a new game mode, a mechanic that breaks a long-standing Counter-Strike convention and a reworked Premier map selection. Valve then followed up with patches on 24 and 25 September.

What is Rush mode?

Rush is a new 3v3 game mode. According to Dust2.us, teams fight through randomly selected battle arenas, and they win each one by either controlling a tower or eliminating the opposing trio. Because the arenas change from match to match, no two games play out quite the same.

The mode needed some fine-tuning straight away. The 24 September patch, as reported by TalkEsport, made these changes:

  • Doubled the countdown after an elimination from 7 to 14 seconds in end rooms and on Convoy
  • Stopped the countdown from starting when a whole team dies through suicides, team kills or disconnects
  • Cut warmup, freeze time and technical timeout periods
  • Fixed several gaps and clipping problems

On 25 September, Valve improved the Rush loading screen so it explains the rules more clearly. It also changed the team damage kick system so players are not kicked at the start of a round.

Silent reloads arrive

The headline change for competitive players is the silent reload. Players can now hold the reload key for a reload that is slower but makes no sound. That gives lurkers and clutch players a new tool, because a loud reload has always been one of the easiest ways to give away a position.

Valve also made un-scoping a sniper rifle silent, which makes it safer for AWPers to reposition.

Players found ways to exploit the new mechanic quickly. The 25 September patch fixed an exploit that allowed a faster silent reload by tapping the button, as well as a shotgun silent reload bug that allowed double firing. Earlier fixes corrected silent reload animations for left-handed viewmodels and the Dual Berettas reload animation.

Premier map picks reworked

Premier's map veto has been redesigned to encourage more map variety, per Dust2.us:

  1. Team 1 selects one map
  2. Team 2 selects two maps
  3. Team 1 picks a final map
  4. One of those four maps is then chosen at random

This makes it harder for a team to force its one comfort map every game, so solo queue players should expect to see a wider spread of maps.

Crosshairs and quality-of-life fixes

The update also redesigned the crosshair interface. The 24 September patch added a pixel-based measurement system, an option to draw half-outlines, a new static square crosshair style, and a fix for settings with a gap of 0. Players had complained that older crosshair codes stopped working after the update.

Other changes include clan tags for Steam Community Group members (now shown in death notices too), clearer bullet impacts, stickers for the C4 and a more accurate halftime scoreboard. The 25 September patch also fixed an AK-47 inspect animation glitch. TalkEsport noted that the 25 September patch was Valve's third update in 72 hours.

Key takeaways

  • The Rush Hour update launched on 22 September with a new 3v3 Rush mode.
  • Holding reload now gives a slower silent reload, and un-scoping snipers no longer makes a sound.
  • Premier map selection now picks one of four team-chosen maps at random.
  • Follow-up patches on 24 and 25 September fixed Rush timers, silent reload exploits and crosshair bugs.

FAQ

How do silent reloads work in CS2? Hold the reload key instead of tapping it. The reload takes longer but makes no sound.

Is Rush mode 5v5? No. Rush is a 3v3 mode played across randomly selected arenas, where teams win by holding a tower or eliminating the other team.

Why do my old crosshair codes look different? Valve redesigned the crosshair system with pixel-based measurements, and some players reported that older codes no longer match their previous crosshairs.
