MPL MY S18 Week 7: Selangor Red Giants lead as Bigetron and Team Flash fight for playoff places
MPL Malaysia Season 18 returns on 8 October with seven Week 7 matches. SRG lead at 9-2, while Bigetron and Team Flash fight for the last playoff places.
MPL Malaysia Season 18 returns this week for its second-to-last week of the regular season. Week 7 runs from Thursday, 8 October, to Sunday, 11 October, at the MPL MY Arena in Quill City Mall, Kuala Lumpur, with seven best-of-three matches across three match days.
It is the league's first action since Week 6 ended on 20 September. With six of the eight teams going through to the playoffs and two M8 World Championship slots at stake, the next two weeks will decide who reaches Stadium Juara.
Standings going into Week 7
Selangor Red Giants (SRG) lead the table with a 9-2 match record and a 20-6 game record. Team Rey are second at 8-3, then come Team Vamos (7-3), Invictus Gaming (6-4), Bigetron MY by Vitality (5-6) and Team Flash (4-6). RRQ Tora (2-9) and AC Esports (1-9) are at the bottom.
Each team plays 14 matches in the double round-robin, and a series win is worth one point. The numbers already favour SRG. On nine wins, they can only be caught by Team Rey, Team Vamos and Invictus Gaming, so they are certain to finish in the top four and are assured of a playoff place.
The bottom two face a much harder task. RRQ Tora have three matches left and AC Esports have four. They are three and four wins behind Bigetron in fifth, so they need near-perfect finishes and other results to go their way.
Week 7 schedule (Malaysia time)
Thursday, 8 October
- Team Rey vs Bigetron MY by Vitality – 5pm
- Selangor Red Giants vs Team Flash – 8.15pm
Friday, 9 October
- Team Vamos vs Invictus Gaming – 5pm
- AC Esports vs RRQ Tora – 8.15pm
Sunday, 11 October
- Team Flash vs Team Vamos – 2.30pm
- Invictus Gaming vs AC Esports – 5pm
- Team Rey vs RRQ Tora – 8.15pm
Matches to watch
Team Vamos against Invictus Gaming on Friday is the key match for the top four. A win would take Vamos to eight wins with three matches still to play, while Invictus need the result to keep pace with the teams above them. Team Flash have the busiest week, playing the leaders on Thursday and Vamos on Sunday. Flash sit sixth, one win behind Bigetron, so results in these games could decide the last playoff place.
Bigetron's game against Team Rey to open the week matters just as much. They are fifth, but they have played 11 matches compared with Flash's 10, so every loss lets Flash close the gap.
Friday night's AC Esports vs RRQ Tora match is a straight fight between the two bottom teams. Tora also play Team Rey on Sunday, so Friday's match is probably their best chance of a win this week.
What is at stake
The top six go into a hybrid playoff format. The top two seeds get a bye into the double-elimination bracket, and seeds three to six play single-elimination games first. Playoff matches are best-of-five, while the lower-bracket final and grand final are best-of-seven. The playoffs move to Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara, and the season finishes on 1 November.
Malaysia's two representatives at the M8 World Championship in Istanbul will come from this season. It is the first M-series world championship to be held in Europe.
