Zheng Was Five-Love Down in the First Set and Still Put Swiatek Out in Straight Sets
Osaka went out to Rybakina as well, and Gauff is in her first US Open quarter-final since the 2023 title.
The fourth round in New York finished over Sunday and Monday and two of the higher women's seeds are gone.
Qinwen Zheng beat the eighth seed Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-3. Zheng was 0-5 down in the first set and took seven games in a row from there. Naomi Osaka, seeded thirteenth, lost to the second seed Elena Rybakina 6-1, 6-4.
Coco Gauff, the fourth seed, beat the fourteenth seed Iva Jovic 6-1, 6-4. It is her first US Open quarter-final since she won the title in 2023. Mirra Andreeva, the fifth seed, came through 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 against Anastasia Potapova. Jessica Pegula, the third seed, beat Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday.
On the men's side the top seed Alexander Zverev beat the twenty-first seed Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-2, 7-6. Ben Shelton, the eighth seed, beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-4, 6-4. Karen Khachanov needed five against Learner Tien, 7-5, 4-6, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4. Alexander Blockx, the twenty-eighth seed, beat Francisco Cerundolo 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, and Botic van de Zandschulp came from two sets down to beat Arthur Gea 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6, 6-4.
The draw thinned early. Novak Djokovic lost in the first round, his first opening-round defeat at this tournament and his earliest exit at a major since the 2006 Australian Open. Jannik Sinner did not enter, his first absence from a major since Wimbledon 2019. It was the first time since the 2003 French Open that none of the Big Three reached the second round of a major.
Venus Williams played the main draw at 46 on a wildcard, the oldest woman in it since Renee Richards in 1981. Her first-round match against Sofia Kenin started at 12.13am, the latest start in the tournament's history.
The women's final is on 12 September and the men's on 13 September.
