Isak Scores Twice in Four Minutes at Portman Road and Iraola Wins a League Match at the Third Attempt

Liverpool won 2-0 at Portman Road on Friday night in front of 30,019. It is the first league win of Andoni Iraola's time at the club.

Alexander Isak scored in the sixth minute and again in the tenth, both laid on by Cody Gakpo. A third Isak goal was ruled out by VAR for offside against Dominik Szoboszlai in the build-up. The game was effectively decided before a quarter of an hour had gone.

Iraola was appointed on 4 June on a two-year contract, eight days after Arne Slot left. His first two league games were draws, 1-1 on the opening day and 2-2 against Nottingham Forest on 29 August. Liverpool went into the weekend tenth on two points and came out of Friday on five from three.

Bradley Barcola came off the bench for his debut. Reported fees for him differ by a wide margin depending on the outlet, and none of them is confirmed by the club.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Manchester City beat Coventry 1-0 through Erling Haaland, Newcastle drew 2-2 with Bournemouth in front of 52,643, Leeds won 1-0 at Brighton through Jayden Bogle, and Brentford and Nottingham Forest both drew without scoring. Coventry are back in the top division after 25 years, the longest absence of any club promoted in the Premier League era.

Everton play Manchester United and Arsenal play Chelsea on Sunday.
