Elvis-Enrique end 16-year wait with platform synchro silver as divers add bronze

Elvis Priestly Clement-Enrique Maccartney Harold won 10m synchro silver by 1.62 points while Ong Ker Ying-Lee Yiat Qing took 3m synchro bronze.

Malaysia's divers won two more medals at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Sunday, 27 September, including a silver that was decided on the last dive.

At the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, Elvis Priestly Clement and Enrique Maccartney Harold took silver in the men's synchronised 10m platform with 377.52 points. Ong Ker Ying and Lee Yiat Qing also won bronze in the women's synchronised 3m springboard with 243.72 points.

Decided on the final dive

According to the New Straits Times, South Korea's Shin Jung-whi and Kim Yeong-taek led the Malaysians by 0.54 points after five rounds.

Elvis and Enrique saved their best dive for last and scored 81.00 points. The Koreans needed 80.46 on their final dive to draw level. They scored 78.84 and finished with bronze on 375.90 points, 1.62 behind Malaysia. China's Yang Hao and Lian Junjie won gold with 465.54.

It is Malaysia's first Asian Games silver in the event since Guangzhou 2010, when Bryan Nickson Lomas and Ooi Tze Liang finished second.

"This is one of their favourite events, and they showed good confidence and consistency throughout the competition," said Malaysia Aquatics diving technical director Yeoh Ken Nee.

He is already looking to the next step. "Moving forward, I hope they can qualify for this event at the (2028) Olympic Games," he said.

Bronze for Ker Ying and Yiat Qing

The women's pair had an outside chance of silver. The NST reported that they trailed South Korea's Kim Su-ji and Kim Na-hyun by 5.58 points going into the last dive. Ker Ying and Yiat Qing scored 52.20, but the Koreans scored 57.60 to secure second place. China's Chen Yiwen and Chen Jia won gold with 328.56.

"We had a chance of getting silver, but Korea's last dive was better than ours, so we missed out," said Ken Nee.

It is Ker Ying's first Asian Games medal. The NST noted that injuries have disrupted her career. For Yiat Qing, the bronze came on her Asian Games debut.

"She handled the pressure very well and performed confidently," Ken Nee said of Yiat Qing.
