The season ends unusually late: Super Bowl LXI is set for February 14, 2027 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, the latest date the league has ever scheduled its championship.

Rule changes adopted on March 31 will shape how games look from week one. The most significant concerns the onside kick, now permitted at any point in a game rather than restricted to trailing teams in the fourth quarter, a change that hands coaches a genuine strategic option instead of a last-resort gamble. Receiving teams now need five players at the setup line instead of six, and when penalties move a kickoff to the 50-yard line, a touchback places the ball at the 20 rather than the 35.

Replay has also expanded. Officials can initiate reviews on potential ejections without an initial flag, and clear errors affecting play can be corrected.
