Yu Yangyi beats defending champion Ding Liren in Armageddon to win the 2026 Shenzhen Masters
Yu Yangyi drew all four rapid games with Ding Liren, split the blitz tiebreaks and then won the Armageddon with white to take the Shenzhen Masters title.
Yu Yangyi has won the 2026 Shenzhen Nanshan International Chess Masters, beating defending champion and former world champion Ding Liren in a final that needed every stage of the tiebreak system. After four drawn rapid games and a one-all split in blitz, Yu won the Armageddon decider with the white pieces to take the title in the southern Chinese city.
An all-Chinese rapid knockout
This year's edition was a 12-player rapid knockout featuring only Chinese players, held at the Qiuxian Pavilion in Shenzhen's Nanshan district. Ding, Yu, Wang Hao and Xu Xiangyu were seeded straight into the quarter-finals, where they were joined by four younger qualifiers born after 2000: Asian champion Kong Xiangrui, Xiao Tong, Huang Renjie and Meng Yihan.
Matches were played over four rapid games at 15 minutes plus a 10-second increment. A level score led to two blitz games at 3 minutes plus 2 seconds, and if that failed to separate the players, an Armageddon game followed, with White receiving 5 minutes to Black's 4 and Black winning the match with a draw.
The road to the final
The quarter-finals, played from 10 October, mostly went to the seeds. Ding beat Meng 3-1 and Yu needed only three games to see off Huang. Wang Hao lost the second game to Xiao but won the third and fourth to advance.
The one upset came in the longest match. Xu Xiangyu and Kong Xiangrui won a rapid game each and drew the other two, and Kong took the second blitz game to go through as the only member of the younger group to reach the last four.
Kong's run ended there, as Ding beat him 2.5-0.5 in the semi-finals. Yu's semi-final against Wang Hao started with two draws before Yu won both of the remaining rapid games.
Nothing between them, then Armageddon
The final was as tight as possible. All four rapid games were drawn, and each player won one of the two blitz games. That sent the title to a single Armageddon game, in which Yu had white and therefore needed to win. He did so, ending Ding's defence of the trophy he won in 2025 by beating Wang Hao in that final.
Wang Hao took third place by winning the play-off for the bronze position.
What it means for both players
For Yu, the win adds a second Shenzhen Masters title to the one he claimed in 2021. The event has had a varied list of winners since it began in 2017, including Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in 2018 and Anish Giri in 2019, as well as Bu Xiangzhi in 2024.
For Ding, reaching the final was another sign of a gradual return to competitive play. The 2023 world champion lost his title to Gukesh Dommaraju in December 2024 and has played a lighter schedule since, but in Shenzhen he won his quarter-final and semi-final comfortably and lost the final only in the last possible game.
