Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia 2026: award-winning Japanese builds, a Hollywood tease and outdoor drifting

ALESS brings its prize-winning Crown build to MAEPS, while fans wait for confirmation of Fast & Furious star Sung Kang's appearance.

With a week to go before Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia (TASM) opens at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS), the first details of what fans will see are coming out. Most of them are coming from Japan.

The show runs from 2 to 4 October, from 10am to 10pm daily. It is the first edition under the TASM name. It replaces Tokyo Auto Salon Kuala Lumpur, which ran for three years at MITEC from 2023 to 2025.

A prize-winning Crown from Gifu

One of the first confirmed exhibitors is ALESS, a VIP and custom sedan specialist from Gifu, Japan, and part of the AS Japan Group. In posts dated 4 and 10 September, the company confirmed it will return to Malaysia with the ROZEL CROWNSEDAN COMPLETE. That build won the top prize in the dress-up sedan category at Tokyo Auto Salon 2026 in January.

According to ALESS's partner Mountain Peak, the car turns the current Toyota Crown sedan into something that looks like a classic luxury saloon. It has new front and rear bumpers and a large rear wing that draws attention to the boot. Last year in KL, ALESS showed an ALESS Century Complete White-Label and a narrow-body Mercedes-Benz G-Class built by sister company Topspeed.

Sung Kang: still a tease, not a confirmation

The biggest name linked to the show is Sung Kang, who plays Han Lue in the Fast & Furious films, including Tokyo Drift. Lifestyle site SETHLUI.com reported in late August that JP Origin had hinted at his appearance on Instagram. It added that organisers "have yet to reveal exactly what he will be doing at the event or when fans can catch him in person."

When we checked, the official TASM website had not confirmed his appearance or published a guest timetable. Fans hoping to meet him should wait for an official announcement before planning which day to go.

What is confirmed on the programme

The official TASM website promises:

  • custom show cars and builds, plus booths from JDM brands and styling companies
  • stage performances by official Tokyo Auto Salon image models from Japan
  • meet-and-greet sessions on the show floor and live stage shows through each day

The biggest change is the space outside. Japanese organiser San-Ei describes a large outdoor area for demonstration runs and live performances. Paultan.org reports that it will include drift demonstrations, something TAS KL never had at MITEC. The Tokyo Auto Salon's own website calls the 2026 edition the largest in the show's history in Malaysia. It also says it will include lifestyle, gaming, shopping and family zones, plus community displays of Malaysian car culture.

"The Tokyo Auto Salon is more than just a car exhibition. It is a festival that celebrates creativity, craftsmanship, innovation and community," said Junichi Fukui, director-general of the Tokyo Auto Salon Federation, when the new format was announced.

What we still don't know

The full exhibitor list, drift schedule and final guest line-up have not been released yet. PlayDash will cover the key confirmations as they come.
