Atletico Madrid Beat Ten Man Real Madrid Two One After Dean Huijsen Was Sent Off Early in the Second Half
Alejandro Grimaldo scored the penalty and Jonathan David struck on his derby debut as Atletico moved above Jose Mourinho's side into second place in La Liga.
Atletico Madrid beat 10-man Real Madrid 2-1 at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on 20 September 2026, with Alejandro Grimaldo and Jonathan David scoring soon after Dean Huijsen was sent off.
The first half was goalless and cagey in a hostile atmosphere. Atletico's Cristian Romero was booked after a VAR review that also rescinded a yellow card shown to Jude Bellingham following an altercation between the two players.
Huijsen was dismissed in the 47th minute for pulling down Giuliano Simeone in the penalty area, and Grimaldo converted the spot kick. David, making his first appearance in the Madrid derby, then added a second from a Simeone cross. Real Madrid responded by replacing Vinicius Junior and Arda Guler.
Antonio Rudiger headed in late on for Jose Mourinho's side, but Real could not find an equaliser with 10 men. It was their second league defeat of the season, and it came in a match where Madrid also protested an unpunished tackle by Lee Kang-in on Federico Valverde.
The result lifted Atletico into second place in La Liga, five points behind leaders Barcelona and one point ahead of Real Madrid, who are now six points adrift of the top.
