Man City 2-4 PSG: Doue, Dembele and Vitinha strike early as Haaland double cannot stop Maresca's first defeat

PSG led 3-0 at half-time at the Etihad. Erling Haaland scored twice to pass Sergio Aguero's club record, but Enzo Maresca's City lost for the first time this season.

Paris Saint-Germain inflicted Manchester City's first defeat of the season on Wednesday, 14 October, winning 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium in the second round of Champions League league-phase matches. The two-time reigning European champions scored three times in the first half through Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha. Erling Haaland scored twice after the break to cut the gap, but Maghnes Akliouche's strike in between meant City never got closer than two goals. The match kicked off at 3am Malaysia time on Thursday.

Two goals in two minutes

PSG took control early. Doue opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a shot from distance. Less than two minutes later, Dembele finished off a flowing team move to make it 2-0. Vitinha added a third in the 32nd minute after a flick from Warren Zaire-Emery, so Luis Enrique's side went in 3-0 up at half-time.

City manager Enzo Maresca had not lost a match this season, and his side arrived on the back of a 3-0 league win at Liverpool on Sunday. His side looked stunned by PSG's pace and passing in the opening half hour.

Haaland leads the response

City came out much stronger after the interval. Haaland headed in to make it 3-1 in the 53rd minute, but Akliouche restored PSG's three-goal lead in the 62nd minute when his long-range shot beat Gianluigi Donnarumma. Haaland scored his second in the 75th minute. City also hit the woodwork twice in the second half.

Donnarumma did make amends late on, saving a penalty from PSG's Ferran Torres to keep the final score at 4-2. Reports after the match noted that City had far more shots and touches in the opposition box than PSG, but the damage had already been done before half-time.

Maresca admitted his team had paid for a poor first half. He said they "deserved something more" from the second half, and argued that the way PSG punished early mistakes was a lesson for his players.

A record night for Haaland

Haaland's two goals still made history. He went into the game level with Sergio Aguero on 36 Champions League goals for City. His first goal made him the club's outright record scorer in the competition, and his second took him to 38.

The Norwegian now has 61 Champions League goals in 60 appearances across spells at Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund and City. No player has scored more in his first 60 games in the competition.

An eventful week at the Etihad

The match was City's first home game since an independent commission found the club guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules. City deny wrongdoing and have appealed. Before the game, Luis Enrique said he hoped City would not be stripped of their trophies.

Former City manager Pep Guardiola watched from the stands, his first visit since leaving the club. City's official report gave the attendance as 60,021, a record for a City home game in Europe.

What comes next

City remain three points clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League. They host Ipswich Town on Saturday, 17 October, at 3pm UK time (10pm Malaysia time). Their next Champions League match is at home on Tuesday, 20 October, at 8pm UK time, which is 3am on Wednesday, 21 October, in Malaysia.
