Sixteen-year-old Max Tang to fly Malaysia's flag at Oceanman open-water World Finals in Dominican Republic
Kuala Lumpur teenager Max Tang will swim the 2km and 5km races at the Oceanman World Finals in Miches from 13 to 15 November after sweeping both in Kota Kinabalu.
Sixteen-year-old Kuala Lumpur swimmer Max Tang will carry Malaysia's flag at the Oceanman open-water swimming World Finals in Miches, Dominican Republic, from 13 to 15 November. He will race in the 2km Sprint and the 5km Half Oceanman in the 15-to-19 age category, having earned his place by winning both distances outright at Oceanman Kota Kinabalu in July.
Beating the adults in Kota Kinabalu
Max was still 15 when he lined up in Sabah, but he finished as the overall champion in both the 2km and 5km events, ahead of swimmers from every age group, adults included, according to Malay Mail.
Oceanman Kota Kinabalu, staged at Shangri-La Rasa Ria, doubles as a qualifier for the World Finals, with the top 10 finishers in each age group earning a ticket. The Kota Kinabalu edition also produced qualifying places for Malaysian women's overall winner Georgene Ee Jern Wee and visually impaired swimmer Faiq Adnan, who qualified alongside his coach, Ooi Win Juat, the Daily Express reported. Organisers have said the event will continue in Kota Kinabalu in 2027.
A pool swimmer moving into open water
Max is not new to competitive swimming. He took part in the Malaysian Games (Sukma) in 2026 and was longlisted for the 400m freestyle at the 48th SEA Age Group Swimming Championships this year.
Open-water racing asks different questions of a swimmer. There are no walls for turns, no lane ropes, and conditions such as currents, waves and water temperature can change the shape of a race. Navigation and pacing over longer distances matter as much as raw speed, which is why the sport often rewards swimmers with a strong middle-distance pool background, such as the 400m freestyle.
Speaking ahead of the trip, Max said representing Malaysia at the World Finals was "an incredible honour", and that he would give his best in both races.
Balancing books and training
Away from the water, Max is a Year 11 student at Garden International School in Kuala Lumpur, where he is working towards 10 IGCSE qualifications. Malay Mail reported that he has already secured two A* grades.
What the World Finals involve
Oceanman is an international open-water series with qualifying events around the world, culminating in an annual World Finals. The 2026 finale will be held in Miches, on the Dominican Republic's east coast, with races across several distances and age categories. Miches is 12 hours behind Malaysian time, so races there will take place overnight for fans following from home.
