New Zealand v India 1st ODI preview: Ravindra and Chapman out for Eden Park series opener

New Zealand host India in the first of five ODIs at Eden Park on 4 November at 10am Malaysia time. Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman are out injured.

New Zealand and India start a five-match ODI series at Eden Park in Auckland on Wednesday 4 November. Play begins at 10am Malaysia time. New Zealand will be without Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman, who were both ruled out with injuries on the weekend. India are captained by Shubman Gill and have Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the squad.

Ravindra and Chapman out

The ICC reported on 1 November that Chapman is recovering from a hamstring injury and needs about two more weeks. Ravindra has a shoulder problem. New Zealand want to give him more time to recover before the two-Test World Test Championship series against India later in November. Head coach Rob Walter said Ravindra's shoulder had not recovered well enough "where he could field comfortably in white-ball cricket."

Henry Nicholls replaces them for the first three ODIs, and Dean Foxcroft joins for the last two. Mitchell Santner captains both squads. The squad for games one to three is Santner, Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Matt Fisher, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Nicholls, Glenn Phillips, Tim Seifert, Nathan Smith, Will Young and Blair Tickner.

India's split squads

The BCCI has picked two ODI squads. Gill captains the team for the first three matches, with Shreyas Iyer as vice-captain. Iyer then takes over as captain for the fourth and fifth matches, with Ishan Kishan as his deputy. Rohit and Kohli are in both squads.

The squad for the first three ODIs also includes KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Naman Dhir, Anshul Kamboj, Gurnoor Brar, Kishan and Prasidh Krishna, who needs fitness clearance. Jasprit Bumrah is not in either ODI squad. He is named only for the Tests that follow.

Coming off a close T20I series

India won the five-match T20I series 3-2. They won the first three matches, and New Zealand won the last two. Glenn Phillips was Player of the Series with 341 runs, and Santner took the most wickets with nine.

The ODI series follows on from January 2026, when New Zealand won 2-1 in India. They lost the opening match and then won the next two. Over all ODIs between the two teams, India lead 63 wins to 52, with one tie and seven no-results.
