Vietnam Has Two Teams at Worlds and Nobody Else in Southeast Asia Has One

MVK Esports of Ho Chi Minh City qualified on championship points, joining Team Secret Whales. Four regional playoffs are still running.

Five teams have so far qualified for the League of Legends World Championship, and two of them are Vietnamese.

MVK Esports, based in Ho Chi Minh City, took its place on championship points rather than by winning a split. A guaranteed top-three finish in the summer split was worth at least 55 points, which was enough regardless of who claimed the direct qualification slots. Team Secret Whales qualified as an LCP Split 3 playoff finalist, as did CTBC Flying Oyster of Taiwan.

That gives the LCP three teams at Worlds, two of them from Vietnam. No other Southeast Asian country has a team in the tournament.

MVK's head coach and co-owner is SofM, who reached the Worlds final as a player in 2020 and returned as a coach in 2024. This will be his third Worlds in one role or another, and he remains the reference point for Vietnamese League of Legends in a way no active player has replaced.

The other two qualified teams are Hanwha Life Esports of the LCK, through winning MSI, and Bilibili Gaming of the LPL on championship points. The LCP was one of only two leagues to send a team via the points system at all.

Four regional playoffs are still running. The LCK playoffs, which finish on 13 September, decide three places. The LEC playoffs run from 5 to 20 September for three more. The LCS playoffs run from 12 September to 4 October, also for three, and the CBLOL playoffs from 5 September to 10 October for two.

The Vietnamese result is worth holding against the region's other numbers. Vietnam has qualified for the Asian Games in five esports titles and now has two teams at Worlds. Its domestic scene has not had the commercial attention that Indonesia's or the Philippines' Mobile Legends ecosystems get, and it has quietly outperformed both in the discipline that carries the most international weight.
