Gianmarco Tamberi Cleared Two Point Three Seven Metres at the Age of Thirty Four to Win the High Jump in Budapest
The Italian began the season ranked fourteenth in the world and had missed the Tokyo final, but jumped a world lead on his second attempt to take the title.
Gianmarco Tamberi won the high jump at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest on 13 September 2026, clearing 2.37m for a world lead.
The 34-year-old Italian went over 2.22m and 2.26m at the first attempt, passed at 2.30m, 2.33m and 2.35m, and then cleared 2.37m on his second try. JuVaughn Harrison of the United States was second with 2.30m and Erick Portillo of Mexico third with 2.26m.
Tamberi had begun the season ranked fourteenth in the world and had failed to reach the final in Tokyo. He won the world title in the same stadium in 2023. He competed with the words showtime babe written on his forearm.
Speaking afterwards he said people should never stop believing in their dreams and never put a limit on themselves, and added that the result was not thanks to him but to the people who were there. Each event winner in Budapest received 150,000 US dollars from a total purse of 10 million dollars across 28 events.
