Twenty Paddlers, a Drummer and a Steersperson Will Race in Hangzhou for Four Days from the Thirtieth of September

The ICF Dragon Boat World Championships return to China with junior, senior and master divisions over distances from 200 metres to 2,000.

The International Canoe Federation stages its Dragon Boat World Championships in Hangzhou from 30 September to 3 October 2026, returning the event to the country the sport came from.

A standard crew is twenty paddlers seated in ten pairs, plus a steersperson at the back and a drummer at the front who beats the stroke rate. A smaller ten-paddler class also exists. The drummer is not decoration: in a boat of twenty, the only way to keep every blade entering the water at the same instant is an audible beat, and a crew that loses timing loses speed immediately.

Races run over four distances. The 200 metres is finished in under a minute, the 500 in about two, the 1,000 in about four, and there is a 2,000-metre event on top of that. Junior, senior and master age divisions all compete.

The sport's history in China runs back more than two thousand years and is traditionally tied to the legend of the poet Qu Yuan, whose drowning is said to have prompted villagers to race boats out onto the water. It reached the United States in 1983 and has spread as a club sport since, with strong participation across Southeast Asia, Australia and North America.

Governance is split. The International Dragon Boat Federation and the International Canoe Federation both administer versions of the sport internationally; this championship is the ICF's. A separate IDBF Club Crew World Championships is also scheduled for 2026, in Hualien, Taiwan.

That divided structure is a recurring feature of sports that grew from festivals rather than from a founding governing body — two federations, two world championships, and crews that generally just enter whichever one their club is affiliated to.

The technical bulletin for Hangzhou had not published its full programme at the time of writing, so the distances above are the sport's standard formats rather than a confirmed schedule for this event.
