Premier League 2026/27 Kicks Off August 21 in the League's Latest-Ever Start

The Premier League returns on Friday, August 21, opening a 2026/27 campaign that runs all the way to Sunday, May 30, 2027, the latest start and finish in the competition's history.

The shift is deliberate. Moving the opening round back a week gives clubs 89 clear days after the previous season ended and 33 days following the FIFA World Cup 26 Final, a concession to player welfare in a calendar that keeps getting tighter. The league has also committed that no two match rounds will fall within 60 hours of each other over the Christmas and New Year period, softening the festive pile-up clubs have complained about for years.

The structure itself is unchanged: 380 fixtures across 33 weekends and five midweek rounds, with the final day kicking off simultaneously as usual. What differs is how much recovery time squads carry into August, and whether World Cup involvement shows up in early-season form.
