Yokozuna Onosato Beat Fujiryoga to Take Eight Wins and the Sole Lead After Day Nine of the Autumn Basho
Ozeki Kirishima slipped to five wins and four losses after Daieisho pulled him down, while Aonishiki won by throw despite visibly struggling with an injured left foot.
Yokozuna Onosato moved to eight wins and one loss and took sole possession of the lead at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo on 21 September 2026, pulling down Fujiryoga with a hikiotoshi on day nine to secure his winning record.
Onosato shifted to his left at the initial charge and brought Fujiryoga, now three and six, to the clay. His victory left four wrestlers one win behind on seven and two: Atamifuji, who drove out Takayasu by oshidashi; Fujinokawa, who toppled ozeki Kotozakura with an overarm throw; Churanoumi, who pushed out Roga; and Kinbozan, who sent Chiyoshoma off the ring with an oshitaoshi.
The ozeki had a difficult afternoon. Kirishima fell to five and four when Daieisho grabbed his arm, chased him to the edge and pulled him down. Aonishiki improved to six and three with a sukuinage throw of Yoshinofuji, although he appeared to be struggling with an injured left foot as he left the ring. Kotozakura dropped to six and three.
In the second-tier juryo division, Kagayaki beat Kayo to stay unbeaten at nine and zero and open a two-win lead in that division.
On day ten Onosato is scheduled to face Hakunofuji, while Aonishiki meets Churanoumi, Kotozakura takes on Atamifuji and Kinbozan faces Toshinofuji. The fifteen-day tournament concludes on Sunday.
