PGL Masters Bucharest opens 24 October: full Round 1 draw and what is at stake for the Singapore Major
PGL Masters Bucharest runs 24-31 October with a US$1.25 million prize pool. Round 1 includes Aurora v The MongolZ, FUT v TYLOO and FURIA v DENDELE, with Singapore Major invites in play.
PGL Masters Bucharest starts on Saturday 24 October and runs until the final on 31 October at the PGL Studio in Bucharest, Romania. Sixteen teams are competing for a US$1.25 million prize pool, and the Round 1 draw is out. The event also comes just before the Valve Regional Standings cut-off that decides invites to the PGL Major in Singapore, the first CS2 Major held in Southeast Asia.
The Round 1 draw
Eight Swiss-stage matches are played on the opening day. HLTV lists them in this order:
- Aurora vs The MongolZ
- FUT vs TYLOO
- Spirit vs BetBoom Team
- MOUZ vs Team Liquid
- Vitality vs 9z
- Legacy vs Nemiga
- G2 vs Natus Vincere
- FURIA vs DENDELE
All matches in the group stage are best-of-three. A team that reaches three wins moves on, and three losses mean elimination. Eight teams advance to a single-elimination playoff. The playoff runs 29 to 31 October, and the grand final is a best-of-five.
Players and teams to watch
The MongolZ play their first top-tier event with nin9 in the lineup, and Fragster says the opener against Aurora is the first big test of the new roster. FUT will bring in new AWPer SunPayus. Winio reports that Vitality will play without apEX, who is expected to miss the event for family reasons, with Lithuanian rifler jL standing in. That is a report, and the organisation had not confirmed it in the sources checked.
The Singapore Major link
The PGL Major Singapore runs from 24 November to 13 December, with the last four days at Singapore Indoor Stadium. Its 32 teams are decided by the Valve Regional Standings published on 2 November, so this event feeds directly into that table. HLTV's event page includes a section on Major invite stakes. It shows that Nemiga and TYLOO have the most to gain, because a strong run here would greatly improve their chances of an invite.
The Asia-Pacific representative in Bucharest is TYLOO, who qualified through the Asian qualifier. The MongolZ are also from the region.
Format and schedule
The Swiss stage runs from 24 to 28 October. Each team plays until it has three wins or three losses, so most teams play between three and five series. The top eight then go into a single-elimination bracket on 29 October, with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and a third-place match all played as best-of-three series. The third-place match and the grand final are both on 31 October.
Falcons, one of the top-ranked sides, are not in the field, HLTV notes. Twelve teams were invited through the Valve rankings and four came through regional qualifiers, according to Noping and Dot Esports: Nemiga (Europe), Team Liquid (North America), DENDELE (South America) and TYLOO (Asia).
Prize money
First place wins US$400,000 and second place wins US$187,500, according to Noping. Third place takes US$150,000. The prize pool is split between the players and the clubs.
