Two Golds, Three Bronzes: Karate Federation Credits 'Ecosystem' for Malaysia's Five-Medal Haul in Nagoya
Karate gave Malaysia five medals at Aichi-Nagoya, two of them gold. MAKAF says ministry, NSC and ISN support made it possible.
Only squash won more gold medals for Malaysia at Aichi-Nagoya 2026 than karate. The national karate team won two golds and three bronzes, and its federation says the support system around the athletes was the reason.
The five medals
Gold
- Adeola Fay Robert, women's kumite -55kg. Competing at her first Asian Games, she beat Iran's Fatemehzahra Saeidabadi 6-4 in the final. It was Malaysia's first gold of the Games.
- C. Shahmalarani, women's kumite -50kg. Her final against Hong Kong's Tsang Yee Ting ended 0-0 and was decided by the judges in her favour.
Bronze
- Thevendran Kaliana Sundram, men's kumite -55kg
- H. Sureeya Sankar, men's kumite -60kg
- Mukhriz Mazlan, Mohamad Haznil Henry and Muhammad Aiqal, men's team kata
That is double karate's gold count from Hangzhou 2022, where Muhammad Arif Afifuddin won the only gold, and two more medals than the three it won there.
"An ecosystem working together"
Malaysian Karate Federation (MAKAF) president Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad said the result was a team effort.
"This success results from an ecosystem working together," he told Bernama. He named support from the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS), preparation by the National Sports Council (NSC) and expertise from the National Sports Institute (ISN).
He said the medals came from coordinated planning, thorough preparation and continued support.
Support during the Games
Some of that support was visible before the first bout. When the organisers ran short of accommodation, the NSC paid for five extra hotel rooms for the karate squad, according to reports published on 15 September. The aim was to keep the athletes settled while other teams dealt with cramped rooms and long check-in queues.
Women led the way
Both golds came from women in the light weight classes. Adeola's win on 22 September was Malaysia's first gold of the Games, and Shahmalarani's followed the next day. Together they lifted the contingent early, before squash, sepak takraw, esports and track cycling added more golds.
The men's medals came in kumite and team kata, showing medal-level depth beyond the two champions.
What it means going forward
Karate is not on the LA28 Olympic programme, so the next major targets are the 2027 SEA Games, which Malaysia hosts, and Doha 2030. The ministry is chasing the overall SEA Games title and has told associations to focus on events where they can win gold. Karate is likely to be one of the sports expected to win medals at a home SEA Games.
The NSC has ordered reviews of four sports that won no medals in Nagoya. Karate shows the opposite: the federation, the government agencies and the athletes worked well together.
