Como Were in Italy's Fourth Tier When an Indonesian Family Bought Them and Beat RB Leipzig Four-One on Their Champions League Debut
Como, owned by Indonesia's Hartono family, beat RB Leipzig 4-1 in their first Champions League match and were the only Italian winners on matchday one.
When Indonesia's Djarum Group, controlled by the Hartono family, took over Como in 2019, the club was playing in Serie D, the fourth tier of Italian football. On 10 September, Como played their first Champions League match and beat RB Leipzig 4-1 at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.
Cesc Fàbregas's side, who qualified by finishing fourth in Serie A in 2025-26, led 2-0 at half-time. Martin Baturina opened the scoring in the 15th minute and Anastasios Douvikas added a second in the 38th. Assane Diao made it 3-0 in the 54th minute before Andrija Maksimović pulled one back for Leipzig four minutes later with a first-time finish. Máximo Perrone scored the fourth in the 90th minute. Baturina also provided two assists.
Caqueret, Goldaniga and Addai were not included in Como's UEFA squad list, and new signing Moise Kean, who joined from Fiorentina, had to wait for his debut. Leipzig, coached by Martín Demichelis and returning to the competition after a year away, were missing several defenders and midfielders through injury.
Como were the only Italian club to win on the opening matchday. Inter lost 2-1 to Real Madrid, Napoli were beaten 1-0 at home by Arsenal and Roma drew 1-1 away to Fenerbahçe.
This is Fàbregas's third season in charge at the club, who have climbed from Serie D to the Champions League since the Hartono family's takeover. Leipzig's next Champions League match is at home to PSV Eindhoven.
