Malaysia Broke the National Record in the Asian Games Four by Two Hundred Metre Freestyle Relay as China Set an Asian Record

China's eighteen-year-old anchor Zhang Zhanshuo split one minute forty two point nine two to overhaul Japan and win gold in an Asian record time.

Malaysia's men's 4x200m freestyle relay team set a national record of 7:18.79 to finish fifth in the final at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre on 21 September 2026, while China won gold in an Asian record of 7:00.17.

The Malaysian quartet of Khiew Hoe Yean, Lim Yin Chuen, Tan Khai Xin and Arvin Shaun Singh Chahal erased the previous national mark of 7:19.50, which they set at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand. They had qualified fifth overall in the morning heats with 7:22.05.

At the front, Japan led for much of the race after Tatsuya Murasa opened in 1:44.70 and Katsuhiro Matsumoto added 1:44.84. China's 18-year-old anchor Zhang Zhanshuo then swam a split of 1:42.92 to take the gold, improving China's own Asian record of 7:00.91 and setting a Games record.

Japan took silver in 7:01.05, a national record, and South Korea, the 2023 champions, won bronze in 7:06.76.

It was one of the few bright spots for Malaysia in the pool on the day, as Andrew Goh went out in the heats of the 100m breaststroke and Lim Yin Chuen and Tong Yu Jin failed to advance from the heats of the 50m freestyle. Pool swimming at the Games continues until 25 September.
