MPL MY S18 playoff race: RRQ Tora and AC Esports meet tonight as four teams chase last two spots
With top four places settled, Bigetron MY, Team Flash, RRQ Tora and AC Esports are fighting for the last two MPL MY Season 18 playoff spots. RRQ Tora play AC Esports at 8.15pm.
The MPL Malaysia Season 18 regular season has two weeks left, and the four playoff places at the top are now settled. The real fight is for the last two places in the top six. Four teams are chasing them: Bigetron MY by Vitality, Team Flash, RRQ Tora and AC Esports. Two of those four meet on Friday night, when RRQ Tora face AC Esports at 8.15pm at the MPL MY Arena in Kuala Lumpur.
This follows on from our Week 7 report, which covered Selangor Red Giants staying top. That report included Thursday's wins for SRG and Team Rey. This piece looks at the playoff maths with five match days left.
The table after Thursday
Teams earn one point for each series win, and game difference is the first tiebreaker. On Thursday, Team Rey beat Bigetron 2-0 and SRG beat Team Flash 2-0.
| Pos | Team | Series W-L | Game diff | Left to play |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Selangor Red Giants | 10-2 | +16 | 2 |
| 2 | Team Rey | 9-3 | +10 | 2 |
| 3 | Team Vamos | 7-3 | +4 | 4 |
| 4 | Invictus Gaming | 6-4 | +2 | 4 |
| 5 | Bigetron MY by VIT | 5-7 | -3 | 2 |
| 6 | Team Flash | 4-7 | -3 | 3 |
| 7 | RRQ Tora | 2-9 | -10 | 3 |
| 8 | AC Esports | 1-9 | -16 | 4 |
The top six reach the playoffs. SRG, Team Rey, Team Vamos and Invictus Gaming cannot fall below sixth. Even if Invictus lose all four remaining series and stay on six points, at most one team below them can pass that total, because Bigetron and Team Flash still have to play each other. At most one other team can draw level with them.
Who needs what
Bigetron MY by VIT (5 points) have the best position of the four. Their last two series are against Team Flash on 17 October and RRQ Tora on 18 October. Two wins would take them to seven points. RRQ Tora and AC Esports can each reach five points at most, so that would confirm Bigetron's place.
Team Flash (4 points) have three series left: Team Vamos on Sunday, then Invictus and Bigetron next week. Their match against Bigetron could decide a playoff place.
RRQ Tora (2 points) can finish on five points at most. Even if they win their last three series, against AC Esports, Team Rey and Bigetron, they would still need Team Flash and Bigetron to drop results. That means every series they lose makes their path harder, including tonight's.
AC Esports (1 point) have four series left, against RRQ Tora, Invictus, Team Rey and Team Vamos. Even four wins would only take them to five points. They need a perfect finish and a lot of help from other results.
The race for first
The top of the table is also open. SRG lead Team Rey by one point. SRG's last two series are against Team Vamos on 16 October and Invictus on 17 October. Team Rey face RRQ Tora on Sunday and AC Esports next week. Team Vamos could also catch them, because they have four series left and can reach 11 points. The league's season outline says MPL Malaysia's top two teams will represent the country at the M8 World Championship in Istanbul, Türkiye, in early 2027.
