Europa League: Bournemouth stun 10-man AC Milan 3-0 as Palace draw thriller at Besiktas
Bournemouth made it three wins from three in their first European campaign, beating 10-man Milan 3-0, while Crystal Palace drew 2-2 in Istanbul.
Bournemouth's first season of European football keeps getting better. On Thursday night at the Vitality Stadium, Marco Rose's side beat AC Milan 3-0 after Milan captain Mike Maignan was sent off before the half-hour mark. That made it three wins from three in the Europa League league phase. Elsewhere on matchday 3, Crystal Palace twice took the lead but drew 2-2 at 10-man Besiktas, and Juventus were held 2-2 by Rennes in Turin. For Malaysian fans, the later kick-offs started at 3am on Friday.
Two penalties and a red card sink Milan
The match swung early. Koni De Winter handled in the fifth minute, and Justin Kluivert sent Maignan the wrong way from the spot three minutes later. The key moment came on 28 minutes: Maignan was shown a straight red card for pushing Tyler Adams in the face at a corner. Sky Sports reported that he is the first Milan goalkeeper to be sent off in a major European match.
The same incident gave Bournemouth a second penalty, and Marcus Tavernier beat substitute goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani on 32 minutes. Substitute Amine Adli finished it six minutes from time with a free-kick through the wall.
There was a family footnote too. Kluivert's goal came more than 31 years after his father, Patrick, scored the winner for Milan in the 1995 Champions League final. Milan coach Ruben Amorim has now failed to beat Bournemouth in five meetings. He said there was "no game after 20 minutes" once his side went down to ten.
Palace pegged back in Istanbul
Besiktas led Crystal Palace at the break through Wilfred Ndidi's goal in first-half stoppage time. Palace turned it around quickly after the restart. Yeremy Pino scored from Anan Khalaili's low cross on 51 minutes, and Jean-Philippe Mateta pounced on a misplaced back-pass four minutes later.
Substitute Junior Olaitan levelled from outside the box on 73 minutes. Besiktas then lost Umit Akdag to a red card for a foul on Jorgen Strand Larsen, but Palace could not find a winner against ten men. Besiktas move to seven points, while Palace have four.
Juventus held, Sunderland draw in Poland
Juventus followed their 3-0 home defeat to Lazio at the weekend with a 2-2 draw against Rennes. Zeki Celik and Nick Woltemade, from the penalty spot, scored for Luciano Spalletti's side. Musa Al-Taamari and Boulaye Dia replied for the French club.
Sunderland scored inside two minutes at Lech Poznan, but Leo Bengtsson equalised on 70 minutes for a 1-1 draw. Celtic lost 2-1 at home to Celta Vigo, with Javi Rodriguez scoring twice in four minutes for the Spanish side.
The rest of the night's results
Real Sociedad won 6-0 at Lillestrom, with Sergio Gomez and Luka Sucic both scoring twice. AZ Alkmaar won 4-0 at Ararat-Armenia, and Union Saint-Gilloise beat Hapoel Beer-Sheva 4-0. Hoffenheim beat Lyon 3-0, Anderlecht won 3-0 at Jagiellonia, and Benfica won 4-1 at Omonia.
