Erling Haaland Scored a VAR Confirmed Winner as Ten Man Manchester City Won the Hundred and Ninety Ninth Derby
Phil Foden was sent off in the twenty third minute but City held on at Old Trafford, where Haaland became the leading scorer in Premier League derby history.
Manchester City beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford on 13 September 2026, winning the 199th Manchester derby with ten men for more than seventy minutes.
Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes during an altercation. Erling Haaland scored the only goal in the 60th minute, meeting a cross from Josko Gvardiol at the far post. The goal was initially flagged for offside and then confirmed by VAR. United struck the post twice, and Gianluigi Donnarumma saved from Bryan Mbeumo at close range in stoppage time.
The goal was Haaland's ninth in eight Premier League Manchester derbies, taking him past Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero as the leading scorer in the fixture's Premier League history. Across all eleven Manchester derbies he has nine goals and three assists.
City moved level on 12 points with the defending champions Arsenal at the top of the table, both having won all four matches. United dropped to thirteenth with one win from four. City manager Enzo Maresca said winning with ten men was a kind of new experience and amazing, while United manager Michael Carrick said he did not understand the VAR decision.
