Pedro Neto double ends Everton's unbeaten run as Liverpool beat nine-man Brentford and Fulham win at last
Chelsea won 2-0 at Everton, Liverpool came from behind to beat nine-man Brentford 2-1, Villa won 1-0 at Newcastle and Fulham got their first win of the season.
Two of the Premier League's unbeaten teams lost on Saturday, 17 October. Pedro Neto scored twice as Chelsea won 2-0 at Everton, and Liverpool came from behind to beat a Brentford side that finished with nine men 2-1. Aston Villa won 1-0 at Newcastle, and Fulham finally got their first league win of the season by beating Hull City 1-0. Manchester City beat Ipswich 3-2 in the day's other game to stay perfect after seven matches.
Neto punishes Everton
Everton and Chelsea were level at 0-0 at half-time in the early game, which kicked off at 7.30pm Malaysia time. Neto then scored 43 seconds into the second half and added a second in the 90th minute. It was David Moyes' side's first Premier League defeat of the season.
Moyes was unhappy with the referee. Just before half-time, Morgan Rogers, who was already on a yellow card, caught James Garner's knee with his studs. VAR checked the challenge and did not send him off. Former referee Mike Dean told Sky Sports he would have shown a red card.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso praised his team's maturity. "We needed one of these away wins," he said. The win moves Chelsea up to 13 points from seven games, above Everton and into the top four for now. It was also their first league clean sheet in nine months.
Liverpool make the most of Brentford's red cards
Brentford went ahead at the Gtech Community Stadium in the 44th minute through Keane Lewis-Potter. Things went wrong for them just before the break, though. Yehor Yarmoliuk was sent off in first-half stoppage time for violent conduct after a VAR review found he had headbutted Jeremy Jacquet.
Andoni Iraola's Liverpool took advantage. Victor Munoz equalised in the 62nd minute and Alexander Isak scored the winner eight minutes later. Vitaly Janelt was then shown a second yellow card in stoppage time for a foul on Rio Ngumoha. Keith Andrews' Brentford lost their unbeaten league record, and Liverpool moved above them into fifth.
Manzambi wins it for Villa at St James' Park
In the evening game, which finished after midnight Malaysia time, Johan Manzambi scored the only goal at Newcastle. He headed in Joao Gomes' cross in the 36th minute. Villa held on in the second half to win 1-0. Newcastle sent on William Osula and Bazoumana Toure on the hour, but could not find an equaliser.
The goal will sting for Newcastle fans. Villa signed Manzambi in the summer after he had been linked with a move to St James' Park.
Fulham get off the mark
Alvaro Arbeloa's Fulham started the day bottom of the table and still looking for a first league win. That changed with a 1-0 win over Hull City at Craven Cottage. Alex Iwobi scored in the 33rd minute after a pass from Sander Berge, and Fulham kept a clean sheet against a Hull side that started the day eighth.
What's next
The round continues on Sunday. Arsenal, six points behind City after Saturday's games, play Nottingham Forest and can cut the gap to three with a win.
