La Liga 2026/27 Opens August 15 With a Staggered Matchday One and Mourinho Back at Real Madrid

La Liga's 2026/27 season begins on Saturday, August 15, with Alaves hosting Getafe, followed by Sevilla against Rayo Vallecano the same day and Celta Vigo versus Osasuna on August 16.

The opening weekend is unusually thin at the top. Clubs that supplied players to the World Cup semi-finals have had their matchday one fixtures postponed, so Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid do not begin until late August. Their matchweek two games fall on August 22-23, with rearranged fixtures slotted into the midweek of August 25-27.

Barcelona start as defending champions after taking the title under Hansi Flick last season. The bigger change is at Real Madrid, where Jose Mourinho has returned for a second spell on a three-year deal signed in June. Diego Simeone, meanwhile, enters his 15th full season at Atletico.

The first Clasico is scheduled for October 25 at Barcelona, with the return at the Santiago Bernabeu on May 9. A winter break runs from December 22 to January 2.
