DFB-Pokal: Sabitzer's stoppage-time free kick sends Dortmund past Bremen as Cologne hit Union for five

Dortmund edged Werder Bremen 3-2, Cologne thrashed Union Berlin 5-0 and Bochum knocked out Mainz on the first night of the DFB-Pokal second round.

Marcel Sabitzer scored a stoppage-time free kick to send Borussia Dortmund into the DFB-Pokal last 16 on Tuesday night. Dortmund beat Werder Bremen 3-2 after throwing away a two-goal lead. It was one of eight second-round ties played on the opening night. Cologne thrashed Union Berlin 5-0, second-tier Bochum knocked out Mainz, and ten-man RB Leipzig came from behind to win at Rot-Weiss Essen.

Dortmund survive a Fullkrug fightback

Dortmund looked comfortable early on. Serhou Guirassy scored in the sixth minute and Carney Chukwuemeka added a second after 17 minutes. Guirassy also had another goal ruled out for offside. In the second half, Bremen fought back. Former Dortmund striker Niclas Fullkrug scored a penalty in the 65th minute after Julian Ryerson's foul, and Bremen equalised three minutes later. The game looked set for extra time until Sabitzer curled in a free kick from the edge of the box in the 93rd minute.

Cologne and Gladbach cruise

Cologne beat Union Berlin 5-0, the biggest win of the night. El Mala scored twice and set up a goal for Maina, and Johannesson and Sebulonsen completed the scoring.

Borussia Monchengladbach beat Karlsruhe 2-0 even though they were down to ten men from the 39th minute. Hack and Ullrich got the goals. Augsburg won 4-2 at lower-league Sonnenhof Grossaspach, with Ribeiro scoring twice.

Leipzig's comeback and Bochum's upset

At Rot-Weiss Essen, Leipzig fell behind to a ninth-minute goal from Brumme and lost Seiwald to a red card just before half-time. Christoph Baumgartner then scored twice in four minutes, in the 78th and 82nd, to win it 2-1 for the visitors.

Bochum beat Mainz 2-0, with Rasmussen scoring straight after half-time and Hofmann adding a second after 75 minutes. Darmstadt won 2-0 at Elversberg. Eintracht Frankfurt scored three times in 18 minutes after a goalless first half to win 3-1 at Hamburg.

The other details

Darmstadt's opener at Elversberg came from Kehl, who had only come on in the fourth minute for the injured Verkooijen and scored with a free kick two minutes later. Smit added the second after a corner early in the second half. In Hamburg, Koch, Burkardt and Ebnoutalib scored for Frankfurt before Moffi pulled one back for HSV from a parried save. In Grossaspach, Molinari and Celiktas scored for the hosts, but goals from Ibrahimovic and Kade in the second half settled it for Augsburg.

The second round finishes on Wednesday with the remaining eight ties, including Bayern Munich against Magdeburg and Bayer Leverkusen against Nurnberg. Those games are played on Wednesday evening in Germany, which is the early hours of Thursday in Malaysia.
