PGL Masters Bucharest: NAVI, Vitality, FUT and BetBoom reach 2-0 as G2 slide to brink of exit

Four teams are one series away from the playoffs at PGL Masters Bucharest after Sunday's second round of the Counter-Strike 2 Swiss stage. Natus Vincere, Team Vitality, FUT Esports and BetBoom Team all moved to 2-0 on 25 October, while G2 Esports, 9z, TYLOO and DENDELE fell to 0-2 and now face elimination matches in the Romanian capital.

The high matches

Vitality produced the most commanding display of the day against The MongolZ. After falling 5-0 behind on Inferno, the French-based side responded through Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut, whose back-to-back four-kill rounds sparked a ten-round run. Vitality won Inferno 13-6 and then Cache 13-3, with ZywOo finishing on a 1.98 rating and flameZ close behind at 1.95.

NAVI followed their triple-overtime escape against G2 on day one with a cleaner 2-0 win over FURIA. The result was another valuable one for NAVI in the Valve Regional Standings: HLTV reported the win lifted them nine places to 11th in Europe, with their invite to the PGL Major Singapore now all but secure.

FUT continued their strong start by beating Team Liquid 13-5 on Cache and 13-9 on Dust2, and BetBoom completed the 2-0 group with a 2-0 win over European qualifier Nemiga.

The low matches

G2's event is in serious trouble. A day after losing to NAVI on the third overtime of Dust2, they were beaten 2-0 by Aurora, who edged Cache 13-11 and then won an overtime on Inferno 16-14.

MOUZ and Team Spirit, both beaten on day one, recovered with 2-0 wins over 9z and Asian qualifier TYLOO respectively. Legacy also bounced back, beating South American qualifier DENDELE 13-9 on Cache and 19-17 on Mirage after overtime.

Where things stand

After two rounds the Swiss table looks like this:

• 2-0: NAVI, Vitality, FUT, BetBoom
• 1-1: Aurora, MOUZ, Spirit, Legacy, FURIA, Liquid, The MongolZ, Nemiga
• 0-2: G2, 9z, TYLOO, DENDELE

The Swiss stage runs until 28 October. All series are best-of-three, three wins send a team to the playoffs and three losses knock them out. Monday's third round therefore offers the first four playoff places to the 2-0 group, while two of the 0-2 teams will be eliminated. Among the 1-1 ties, HLTV lists Spirit against FURIA.

What is at stake

Sixteen teams, twelve of them invited and four from regional qualifiers, are competing for a $1,250,000 prize pool, with the champions earning $225,000 in player prize money plus a matching club share. The top eight advance to a single-elimination playoff bracket from 29 to 31 October, with best-of-three matches, a third-place match and a best-of-five grand final.

The tournament also lands in the final week before the 2 November ranking cut-off for PGL Major Singapore invites, which is why results such as NAVI's carry extra weight. That Major runs from 24 November to 13 December, with the final four days at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. For Asian fans, TYLOO carry the region's hopes alongside The MongolZ in Bucharest, and both now need wins to stay in contention.
