UFC Vegas card reshuffled: Cortes-Acosta and Walker headline after Sean Brady pulls out

Heavyweights Waldo Cortes-Acosta and Johnny Walker headline UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas on 7 November after Sean Brady withdrew with a knee infection.

This weekend's UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas has a new headliner. Heavyweights Waldo Cortes-Acosta and Johnny Walker will meet over five rounds at the Meta APEX on Saturday, 7 November (US time), after the original main event between welterweights Gabriel Bonfim and Sean Brady fell apart. For fans in Malaysia, the main card starts at 9am on Sunday, 8 November.

Why the main event changed

Brady was forced out of his welterweight bout with Bonfim because of a staph infection in his knee. Rather than find a short-notice replacement, the promotion removed Bonfim from the card and promoted the heavyweight fight to the top slot. Both men accepted the five-round main event at short notice, and both are returning less than a month after their last fights, according to Yardbarker.

Cortes-Acosta needs a reset

Cortes-Acosta, a 35-year-old from the Dominican Republic based in Phoenix, brings a 17-4 record and plenty of knockout power. He is, however, on the first two-fight losing streak of his UFC career, after defeats to Alexander Volkov and, most recently, a unanimous decision loss to Curtis Blaydes. Khel Now notes that a win is important if he wants to hold on to his place in the top six of the heavyweight rankings. His best win to date came against Derrick Lewis.

Walker on the rise again

Brazil's Johnny Walker, 34, is 23-10 and arrives in better form. He stopped Mick Parkin with a first-round flying knee in his last outing, bouncing back from a loss to Dominick Reyes. Walker has the physical edge on paper, standing 6ft 6in with an 82-inch reach against Cortes-Acosta's 6ft 4in and 78 inches. The question, as ever with Walker, is whether he can keep the fight at range and avoid the heavy exchanges that have cost him in the past.

A strawweight co-main with title stakes

The co-main event is a women's strawweight bout between Tatiana Suarez and Virna Jandiroba, two contenders who have both come up short in title fights. Suarez lost to Zhang Weili, while Jandiroba was beaten by Mackenzie Dern, who won the vacant belt by unanimous decision. Both arrive on winning runs and will see a victory as a way back towards another title shot.

The main card also features bantamweights Davey Grant and Elijah Smith and a bout between Billy Elekana and Lucas Fernando. Priscila Cachoeira faces Nina Milosevic, and Karine Silva takes on Gabriella Fernandes on the undercard.

Malaysia start times

US clocks went back on 1 November, so Eastern Time is now 13 hours behind Malaysia. The preliminary card begins at 5pm ET on Saturday, which is 6am MYT on Sunday, 8 November. The main card follows at 8pm ET, or 9am MYT, with the main event expected towards the end of the broadcast. Check your local UFC broadcaster or streaming service for availability in Malaysia.
