Betis 2-5 Barcelona: Lamine Yamal and Rodri on target as Flick's side make it nine LaLiga wins from nine
Barcelona scored five in Seville to stay perfect in LaLiga before PSG and the Clasico. Atletico won late at Espanyol, and PSG came from behind at Strasbourg.
Barcelona's perfect start to the season goes on. Hansi Flick's side beat Real Betis 5-2 at La Cartuja in Seville on Saturday, 17 October. That makes it nine wins from nine in LaLiga and 11 from 11 in all competitions. Lamine Yamal, Rodri, Gabriel Jesus, Eric Garcia and Dani Olmo scored for Barcelona, while Betis played the last part of the game with 10 men. Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid won 1-0 at Espanyol with a late goal, and Paris Saint-Germain came from behind to win 3-1 at Strasbourg.
Five goals in Seville
Yamal gave Barcelona the lead in the 10th minute. Betis equalised in the 28th minute when Valentin Gomez headed in a Pablo Fornals cross. Giovani Lo Celso then thought he had put Betis ahead with a long-range volley, but VAR ruled it out for a handball by Cucho Hernandez in the build-up.
Barcelona went back in front in the 41st minute. Rodri scored from a corner, his first goal for the club. Gabriel Jesus had a goal ruled out for offside, then made it 3-1 in the 53rd minute. Abde Ezzalzouli pulled one back for Betis almost straight away, but Eric Garcia restored the two-goal lead in the 63rd minute after a pass from Pau Cubarsi. Olmo scored the fifth in the 80th minute.
Betis had Facundo Bernal sent off with a straight red card after a clash with Yamal. Manuel Pellegrini, the Betis coach, was also booked.
Matching a Real Madrid record
According to Barcelona, nine wins from nine games equals the start Real Madrid made in 1968-69. The club said that beating Madrid in their next league game would set a new club record.
There was good news on Raphinha, who came back from injury. Eric Garcia left the pitch early with a possible fitness problem, though.
PSG then the Clasico
Barcelona's next game is away to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday. After that, they host Real Madrid in the first Clasico of the season on Sunday, 25 October, at 9pm Spanish time. Clocks in Europe go back that morning, so kick-off will be 4am on Monday, 26 October in Malaysia. Real Madrid will be without Vinicius Junior, whose four-match LaLiga ban rules him out of the game.
Atletico and PSG win late
Atletico Madrid needed until the 89th minute to break down Espanyol. Alex Baena scored the only goal of the game. Atletico have now won six games in a row in all competitions. Espanyol have lost five of their nine league games, and coach Manolo Gonzalez is under growing pressure.
In Ligue 1, Luis Enrique left several regulars on the bench at Strasbourg with the Barcelona game in mind, and his side were nearly punished. Gio Reyna gave Strasbourg the lead in the first half. PSG were still behind when Ousmane Dembele missed a penalty in the second half. Illya Zabarnyi equalised late on, Dembele made up for his miss by scoring the winner, and Desire Doue added a third in stoppage time.
