MPL MY S18: Team Rey beat RRQ Tora 2-0 as Team Flash need one win to seal the last playoff spot

Team Rey swept RRQ Tora on 11 October to sit level with Selangor Red Giants on 10 wins, leaving one week of MPL MY S18 to settle the byes and the sixth playoff place.

Team Rey closed out Week 7 of MPL Malaysia Season 18 with a 2-0 win over RRQ Tora on Sunday, 11 October, moving level with Selangor Red Giants (SRG) on 10 series wins. With one week of the regular season left, five teams are already sure of a playoff place. The two upper-bracket byes and the sixth and final spot are still open.

Team Rey keep pace at the top

The result was Team Rey's second sweep of the week. On 8 October they also beat Bigetron MY by VIT 2-0, so they finished Week 7 with four game wins and no losses. The official MPL MY standings, cross-checked against two independent results trackers, have them at 10-3 in series and 21-9 in games.

SRG also won their only Week 7 match, against Team Flash, and lead the table at 10-2 (22-6 in games). Team Vamos are third at 9-3 after beating Invictus Gaming 2-1 on 9 October and Team Flash 2-0 on 11 October.

RRQ Tora's week was a mixed one. They beat AC Esports 2-1 on 9 October, then lost to Team Rey and dropped to 3-10, seventh in the table. AC Esports picked up their second series win of the season on 11 October, beating Invictus Gaming 2-1.

Standings after Week 7

  1. Selangor Red Giants 10-2 (games 22-6)
  2. Team Rey 10-3 (21-9)
  3. Team Vamos 9-3 (19-12)
  4. Invictus Gaming 6-6 (15-15)
  5. Bigetron MY by VIT 5-7 (14-17)
  6. Team Flash 4-8 (11-16)
  7. RRQ Tora 3-10 (11-22)
  8. AC Esports 2-10 (6-22)

What is settled and what is not

Six of the eight teams reach the playoffs. SRG, Team Rey, Team Vamos, Invictus Gaming and Bigetron cannot be caught by the bottom three, so their places are secure.

The sixth place is between Team Flash, RRQ Tora and AC Esports. Flash have four wins and two matches left, against Invictus Gaming and Bigetron. RRQ Tora and AC Esports can finish with four wins at most. That means one more win would guarantee Flash the last spot. If Flash lose both, RRQ Tora would need to beat Bigetron, or AC Esports would need to beat both Team Rey and Team Vamos. Tie-breakers would then decide who goes through.

At the top, the two byes into the double-elimination stage are still undecided. SRG, Team Rey and Team Vamos are all in contention, and Invictus Gaming can no longer reach the top two. Team Rey have finished all but one of their matches, while SRG and Vamos each have two left, including a meeting with each other.
