SEA Games 2027: MASOC launches nationwide promotional tour with Kuala Lumpur convoy

An open-top truck convoy toured five Kuala Lumpur landmarks to kick off a three-month campaign for the 2027 SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games.

The countdown to Malaysia's next SEA Games has moved onto the streets of Kuala Lumpur. The Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC 2027) launched a nationwide promotional tour on Saturday for the 34th SEA Games and the 14th ASEAN Para Games, taking an open-top truck convoy through some of the capital's busiest spots to build public interest less than a year before the opening ceremony.

A convoy through the capital

According to Bernama and RTM, the launch on 24 October took the tour to five landmarks: Pasar Seni (Central Market), The Exchange TRX, Bukit Bintang, Dataran Merdeka and the KLCC Twin Towers. The convoy carried the official Games branding, and the programme included meet-and-greet sessions with national athletes, appearances by the official mascot Tuah, marching bands, cheerleading squads, sports-themed games and souvenir giveaways for the public.

The tour is planned to run for around three months. After starting in the central zone, it will move on to the east and south zones before finishing in the north, with the next phase due in January 2027. MASOC chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Rashid Yaakub said the campaign would also reach schools, villages and rural areas, and tap into existing programmes run by government ministries and agencies, including Youth and Sports Ministry and tourism ministry activities.

Key dates for 2027

The SEA Games will be held from 18 to 29 September 2027, spread across four main clusters in Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Johor and Penang. The ASEAN Para Games follow from 17 to 23 October 2027 in Kuala Lumpur.

According to published plans, the opening ceremony is scheduled for the Sarawak Stadium in Kuching, with the closing ceremony at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium. Outlying venues include the National Velodrome in Nilai and the National Sailing Centre in Langkawi. A preliminary list of 38 sports was announced in December 2025, with the final programme subject to agreement among member nations.

Funding and sponsorship

MASOC has set a sponsorship target of RM200 million for the two Games. Earlier this month, Abdul Rashid said an estimated RM40 million to RM50 million had been secured in cash and in-kind contributions, and that more than 10 major companies had shown interest. For comparison, the Kuala Lumpur 2017 edition raised about RM100 million. The overall budget for the Games cluster was originally set at RM700 million, a figure MASOC has said it expects to be sufficient.

The committee has already used other events as a promotional platform. In September, MASOC 2027 sponsored the sprint jersey at the 30th Le Tour de Langkawi cycling race, using the international broadcast to showcase the Games branding and Tuah.

A milestone edition for Malaysia

The 2027 Games will be the seventh time Malaysia has hosted the region's biggest multi-sport event, after 1965, 1971, 1977, 1989, 2001 and 2017. It also coincides with the 70th anniversary of Malaysian independence, which gives the event added significance at home. Spreading the Games beyond the Klang Valley to Sarawak, Johor and Penang is also intended to bring the competition closer to fans in different parts of the country.
