The Twelve-Hour Lawn Mower Race Is Not Happening This Year Because Nobody Could Find a Field

The British Lawn Mower Racing Association has confirmed on its own website that the British 12 Hour will not run in 2026 due to a lack of a suitable venue. For an event that has been staged for decades, a missing field is an unusually mundane way to lose a season.
The race in a normal year starts at eight o'clock on a Saturday evening and finishes at eight the following morning. Teams of three drivers rotate through the night on a one-mile circuit cut into a field. The mowers reach around fifty miles per hour and the only suspension is a padded seat.
The distance record for the twelve hours stands at 354.5 miles. Guinness World Records also carries entries for the fastest racing lawn mower.
The association was founded in 1973 by the rally co-driver Jim Gavin at Wisborough Green in West Sussex, after he watched a groundsman mowing a cricket pitch and worked out that everyone already owned the vehicle. The first meeting attracted eighty mowers.
The rules have barely changed since, and they are the point. No sponsorship. No commercialism. No cash prizes. No engine modification beyond removing the governor. The association markets itself as the cheapest form of motorsport in Britain, and it means it: what you race is a machine bought to cut grass.
The list of people who have taken part is longer than the premise suggests. Sir Stirling Moss raced. So did Derek Bell, who won Le Mans five times, the actor Oliver Reed, the commentator Murray Walker, and the Isle of Man TT rider Guy Martin.
A sport with no sponsors and no prize money has no budget to secure land, which is exactly why one missing venue cancels a national endurance race. The BLMRA's other fixtures are unaffected.
The venue problem is not unique to lawn mower racing. British novelty championships are almost all staged on private land lent by a farmer, a pub or a village trust, and the arrangement usually survives on one person's goodwill. When that person sells the field or stops answering, there is no governing body with a budget to replace it.
