The Cowal Highland Gathering Runs to Saturday and the World Highland Dancing Final Is the Reason Twenty Thousand People Go

Dunoon Stadium has been hosting this since 1894. Saturday carries the World Highland Dancing Championships Finals, the Cowal Pipe Band Championships and the heavy athletics.

The Cowal Highland Gathering is running at Dunoon Stadium in Argyll from Thursday 27 to Saturday 29 August. Saturday is the day that matters: the World Highland Dancing Championships Finals, the Cowal Pipe Band Championships and the afternoon heavy athletics all fall on it.

The three days

Day Main competition
Thursday Highland dancing qualifying rounds
Friday Scottish National Highland Dancing Championships
Saturday World Highland Dancing Finals, pipe bands, heavies

Friday evening also carries a concert, the Gig at the Gathering.

The pipe band history

Pipe band competition at Cowal started in 1906. The Argyll Shield, donated that year by Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll, still goes to the winning Grade 1 band. Until the World Pipe Band Championships began in Glasgow in 1947, Cowal was regarded as the premier pipe band competition anywhere. It lost major championship status after 2013 because the site could not accommodate the number of bands entering.

The gathering itself

The modern event was first held on 11 August 1894, organised by Robert Cameron, with local Highland games in Dunoon going back to 1871. Attendance runs at roughly 20,000. Before the pandemic the gathering regularly drew more than 1,500 competitors a year. Scottish backhold wrestling was added in 2007. Saturday's heavy athletics include the caber.

The organisation is a Scottish Incorporated Charitable Organisation, charity number SC047875.
