What one round has already told us

Opening weekend was unkind to the clubs expected to be comfortable. Hull City beat Manchester United 2-0 on their return to the division, Brentford put three past Tottenham, and Brighton beat Aston Villa 4-0, which leaves Villa bottom on goal difference going into a Monday night meeting with Arsenal. Manchester City and Newcastle both drew, Newcastle 2-2 with Liverpool.

Coventry City, Hull City and Ipswich Town are the promoted sides. Coventry v Hull on Saturday is the first meeting of two of them.

The window closes on Tuesday

Newcastle have been the selling club of the summer, with Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon all moving on, and reported fees for the window's biggest deals differ by five to ten million pounds between outlets - treat any single figure with care. Deadline day itself is Tuesday 1 September, with a deal sheet granting a further two hours' grace.
