October FIDE ratings: Abdusattorov climbs to world No.5 and Erdogmus, 15, sets age record after Olympiad

Uzbekistan's Olympiad gold lifted Abdusattorov to fifth on the October FIDE list, while 15-year-old Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus became the highest-rated player ever at his age.

The first FIDE rating list since the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand has reshaped the top of world chess. Published on 1 October, the list shows Uzbekistan's Nodirbek Abdusattorov up to fifth in the world after leading his country to open team gold, while Turkey's Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, 15, has become the highest-rated 15-year-old in history.

Magnus Carlsen remains world No.1 on 2823, unchanged from September, with Hikaru Nakamura second on 2792. Neither played at the Olympiad.

The new top 10

Behind Carlsen and Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana is third on 2784 after dropping five points in Samarkand. Javokhir Sindarov, who challenges Gukesh for the world title in Geneva next month, gained four points to sit fourth on 2782.

Abdusattorov is two points behind on 2780 after an 18-point gain, moving up from seventh. He won individual gold on board one and beat Richard Rapport, Ding Liren and Caruana along the way. The rest of the top 10 reads: Wesley So (2770), R. Praggnanandhaa (2763), Vincent Keymer (2761), Wei Yi (2758) and Alireza Firouzja (2757). Wei Yi climbed from 12th after gaining six points, while Arjun Erigaisi dropped out of the top 10 after losing 13 points and is now 12th on 2746.

Uzbekistan's golden month

Samarkand was a triumph for the host nation. Uzbekistan won open team gold, and three of their players made big gains. Alongside Abdusattorov and Sindarov, Nodirbek Yakubboev added 27 points, the biggest gain of anyone in the top 100, to cross 2700 for the first time. He is now 26th in the world on 2712.

China won the women's Olympiad, and India took bronze in that section, with Koneru Humpy gaining nine points.

A 15-year-old record holder

Erdogmus gained 15 points to reach 2731, which places him 17th in the world and makes him the highest-rated 15-year-old ever. It also stretches his lead at the top of the junior rankings. World champion Gukesh Dommaraju is second among juniors on 2710, 21 points behind, and 28th overall.

Gukesh's ranking is a talking point ahead of his title defence against Sindarov, who now sits 72 points above him on the list. The match runs from 22 November to 13 December in Geneva, with game one on 24 November.

Women's list and the Southeast Asian picture

Hou Yifan, who rarely plays, is still the top-rated woman on 2596. Zhu Jiner regained second place on 2559 after gaining nine points with team and individual gold on board one for China, ahead of Ju Wenjun (2553), Lei Tingjie (2552) and Aleksandra Goryachkina (2536).

For Southeast Asian fans, Vietnam's Le Quang Liem is the region's highest-ranked player at 16th in the world on 2732, one point above Erdogmus. Indonesia also had a memorable Olympiad moment when IM Satria Duta Cahaya drew with Gukesh in round two.
