The US Open Put One Hundred and Eight Million Dollars on the Table and the Threatened Player Boycott Went Away

Total player compensation is up twenty per cent on last year and the singles champions get 5.5 million each. The mixed doubles title was decided on 27 August, three days before the main draw starts.

Total player compensation at the 2026 US Open is $108 million, a record and a twenty per cent rise on last year's $90 million. The men's and women's singles champions each take $5.5 million, up from $5 million. First-round singles losers are guaranteed $110,000.

What else came with it

The USTA committed a new $2 million player support fund, split equally between the men's and women's draws, and announced a Grand Slam Player Advisory Council. The Australian Open, Roland-Garros and Wimbledon already have equivalent bodies.

The context is a dispute rather than a gesture. Leading ATP and WTA players had threatened a coordinated media boycott of the tournament, having already staged one at the French Open in May. Their case is that players receive around fifteen per cent of Grand Slam revenue and should reach twenty-two per cent by 2030, with more pension provision and a formal say in governance. Players called the US Open's response important progress.

The mixed doubles was over before the main draw began

The revamped mixed doubles championship is now played during Fan Week. Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik beat Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 1-6, 10-6 in the final on 27 August for a $1 million winner-take-all prize.

Match Result
Final Muchova/Mensik beat Bencic/Cobolli 6-3, 1-6, 10-6
Semi-final Muchova/Mensik beat Andreeva/Rublev 5-4(6), 3-5, [11-9]
Semi-final Bencic/Cobolli beat Svitolina/Monfils 4-5(7), 4-1, [10-5]

Earlier rounds used short sets to four. The final was played as standard sets to six with a ten-point match tiebreak in place of a third set. Muchova and Mensik saved two match points in the semi-final.

The main draw

Qualifying finishes on 29 August. The singles first round runs from Saturday 30 August to Monday 31 August, and the tournament closes on 13 September.
