Can Antonelli be crowned F1 champion in Austin? The title maths explained before Monday's 4am race

Kimi Antonelli leads by 102 points. A win, Russell ninth or lower and Hamilton fifth or lower would make him F1's youngest world champion at COTA.

Kimi Antonelli starts the United States Grand Prix from pole position knowing that a win, combined with the right results behind him, would make him Formula 1 world champion with five rounds to spare. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver leads the standings by 102 points heading into round 18 at the Circuit of the Americas, which starts at 4am on Monday, 26 October, Malaysia time. As of Sunday morning in Malaysia the race has not yet been run.

The standings before Austin

These are the top six in the drivers' championship after the Singapore Grand Prix:

  1. Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) 340
  2. George Russell (Mercedes) 238
  3. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) 229
  4. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) 221
  5. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) 215
  6. Lando Norris (McLaren) 201

Austin is not a sprint weekend, and none of the remaining rounds are either. After Sunday there are five grands prix left, in Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi, each worth 25 points to the winner. That means the most any driver can score after Austin is 125 points. There is no longer a bonus point for fastest lap.

The three conditions

For Antonelli to clinch on Sunday, three things must happen:

  • Antonelli wins the race. Second place, worth 18 points, could stretch his lead to 120 at most, which is not enough.
  • Russell finishes ninth or lower. If Russell scores 2 points or fewer, Antonelli's lead over him grows to at least 125. If Russell finishes eighth (4 points), the lead would be 123 and the fight goes on.
  • Hamilton finishes fifth or lower. Hamilton is 111 behind. Fifth place (10 points) would leave him 126 adrift, out of reach. Fourth place (12 points) would leave him 124 behind and still in contention.

Verstappen and Leclerc cannot stop him if he wins. Even second place for Verstappen would leave him 126 behind, and Leclerc, already 125 back, would fall further adrift.

Why a 125-point lead is enough

If Russell finishes ninth and Antonelli wins, the gap would be exactly 125 points. Russell could only draw level by winning all five remaining races while Antonelli scored nothing. A tie on points is decided by the number of wins. Antonelli has eight wins this season to Russell's three, so even in that extreme case he would have nine to Russell's eight and take the title on countback.

A record within reach

Antonelli was born on 25 August 2006, so he would be 20 years and 61 days old on race day in Austin. Sebastian Vettel has held the record for the youngest world champion since 2010, when he won his first title aged 23. If Antonelli seals it this weekend or at any of the remaining rounds this year, he would take that record by a wide margin.

If it does not happen on Sunday

The more likely outcome, given that Russell starts sixth and Hamilton fifth, is that the decision moves to Mexico City on 1 November. There, Antonelli would need to leave with a lead of at least 100 points over everyone, since only four races and 100 points would then remain. With a 102-point cushion already, he can afford to be measured if the race does not fall his way.

Key takeaways

  • Antonelli leads Russell by 102 points with six rounds left, including Austin.
  • He clinches in Austin only if he wins, Russell is ninth or lower and Hamilton fifth or lower.
  • A tie on points would go to Antonelli on wins, eight to three so far.
  • He would become the youngest champion in F1 history, breaking Vettel's 2010 mark.
  • The race starts at 4am Monday, 26 October, Malaysia time.
