The International 2026 Main Event Starts August 20 With Eight Teams Left and 800,000 Peak Viewers Logged
TI 15's Swiss stage cut the field from 16 to eight at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, with a double-elimination bracket, a best-of-five grand final and a prize pool that has grown to roughly $2.8 million.
The International 2026 has done the hard part of the sorting. TI 15's Swiss group stage ran from 13 to 16 August and cut a 16-team field down to the eight sides who will contest the main event at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center from 20 to 23 August.
The eight who made it
TEAM VISION, Team Liquid, Nigma Galaxy, Team Falcons, BoomBoys, Team Spirit, Iron Wing and Team Yandex are through.
The elimination round was where the recognisable names started falling. Vici Gaming went out 0-2 to Team Falcons, Aurora lost 0-2 to BoomBoys, GamerLegion went down 0-2 to Iron Wing, and both Team Resilience and LGD Gaming lost 1-2 deciders — to Team Spirit and Team Yandex respectively.
Losing LGD in front of a home crowd in Shanghai is the result that will sting locally.
Format and money
The Swiss stage used best-of-three matches, with the top three teams advancing straight to the playoffs and places four to 13 fighting through an elimination round for the five remaining slots.
The main event is a double-elimination bracket. Every series is best-of-three except the grand final, which is best-of-five.
The prize pool started from the traditional $1.6 million base and has grown through in-game supporter content to around $2.8 million, with the winner taking home at least $1.2 million. That is a long way from the crowdfunded peaks of the last decade, and the shift has changed what TI is for: less a single annual jackpot, more the capstone of a season-long circuit.
The viewership picture
The group stage drew a peak of 802,782 concurrent viewers on 13 August, with 23.36 million hours watched and an average audience of 462,592 across more than 50 hours of airtime. The single most-watched series was PARIVISION against Team Falcons on day one of the group stage, which peaked at 798,036.
Coverage runs across Twitch, YouTube and Facebook in English, Russian and Spanish, with DouYu, Huya and Bilibili carrying the Chinese-language broadcasts — which is why headline concurrent figures for TI have always understated the true audience.
What to expect from the bracket
Double elimination over four days with best-of-threes throughout tends to favour teams with a deep hero pool over teams with one dominant strategy, because a lower-bracket run means playing the same opponents' drafts twice. Team Spirit and Team Falcons arrive as the two sides most likely to survive that grind; TEAM VISION, first through to the playoffs, gets the rest a top seed is worth.
