Orio Won a Thirty Fourth Rowing Flag in the Bay at San Sebastian by Sixteen Point Nine Six Seconds
Forty five fixed seat boats entered a regatta first held in 1879, in which the men row 5,556 metres over three laps and two turns on each of two Sundays.
Orio won the Bandera de La Concha in the bay at San Sebastian on 13 September 2026, taking the flag for a thirty fourth time with an aggregate of 39 minutes 27.56 seconds over two Sundays.
Donostiarra were second at 16.96 seconds and Zierbena third at 31.10, followed by Bermeo, Hondarribia, Getaria, Lekittarra and Ondarroa. Orio's leg on the second Sunday, 19 minutes 35.96 seconds, was the fastest of the day. Their boat is the San Nicolas and their coxswain Gorka Aranberri took an eleventh personal flag.
Donostia Arraun Lagunak won the women's flag for a fifth time and a fourth in succession, leading on both Sundays in the boat Luganene, coxed by Nagore Osoro and coached by Juan Mari Etxabe.
Forty five traineras entered, 25 men's crews and 20 women's, with time trials on 2 and 3 September reducing the field. Zierbena set the fastest qualifying time for a third consecutive year. Bermeo were dropped into the consolation race after a three second penalty.
The men row 5,556 metres, three laps with two turns; the women row 2,778 metres. The winning crew in each category receives 25,000 euros, with 15,500 for second and 5,100 for eighth, and a further 8,000 euros goes to the best crew from Gipuzkoa in each division. The regatta has been held since 1879.
Aranberri said he was starting to imagine what would happen on the day he did not win the flag. Osoro said this was not normal and that these were moments to enjoy.
