Istanbul to host World Rapid and Blitz 2026 as Gukesh v Sindarov and London Classic loom

FIDE names Istanbul as host of the 26-30 December World Rapid and Blitz. Plus Gukesh v Sindarov dates, 10pm Malaysia start times and the London Chess Classic field.

Istanbul will host the 2026 FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships from 26 to 30 December, FIDE announced on 29 October, completing a crowded end-of-year chess calendar that also includes the Gukesh Dommaraju v Javokhir Sindarov world title match in Geneva and a refreshed London Chess Classic. Here is what fans in Malaysia and Southeast Asia need to know about the three big events, and when to tune in.

Istanbul gets the year-end speed chess finale

The World Rapid and Blitz Championships will crown four world champions, in the Open and Women's sections of both rapid and blitz. Players arrive on 25 December and the competition runs until 30 December. Freedom Holding Corp., FIDE's strategic partner since 2023, is the title sponsor. FIDE has not yet named the venue or published the regulations, prize fund and registration details, which it says will follow shortly.

FIDE President Timur Turlov said the federation was "delighted to bring the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships to Istanbul" and thanked the Turkish Chess Federation. It is a familiar stage for top-level chess: the city hosted the Chess Olympiad in 2012.

The defending champions all come from the 2025 edition in Doha. Magnus Carlsen won both open titles, taking the rapid with 10.5/13 and beating Nodirbek Abdusattorov 2.5-1.5 in the blitz final, according to Chess.com. Aleksandra Goryachkina won the women's rapid after a playoff against China's Zhu Jiner, and Kazakhstan's Bibisara Assaubayeva claimed her third women's blitz crown by beating Anna Muzychuk in the final.

Istanbul is five hours behind Malaysia (UTC+3 against UTC+8), so afternoon rounds in Türkiye will fall in the evening Malaysia time.

Gukesh v Sindarov: the world title on the line

Before that, the classical world championship takes centre stage. Defending champion Gukesh of India meets Uzbekistan's Sindarov, the 2026 Candidates winner, in Geneva, in a match running from 22 November to 13 December. Game 1 is on 24 November and Game 14 is scheduled for 11 December, with tiebreaks, if needed, on 12 December. Rest days fall on 27 November and 1, 5 and 9 December.

The match is over a maximum of 14 classical games, and the first player to 7.5 points wins. A 7-7 score goes to rapid and blitz tiebreaks. The prize fund is US$2.5 million, with each player earning US$200,000 for every classical game won.

Games start at 3pm in Geneva. With Switzerland on Central European Time (UTC+1) in winter, that is 10pm Malaysia time, which makes this an all-Asian title match that fans in the region can follow live in the evening.

FIDE had originally announced dates of 25 November to 15 December, but regulations approved in August moved the schedule forward, as World Chess reported.

London Chess Classic returns with a new-look field

The 16th XTX Markets London Chess Classic runs from 24 November to 7 December. The main festival is at the Novotel London West in Hammersmith, with the opening ceremony and a blindfold event at the Tower of London, ChessBase reported on 29 October.

Defending champion Abdusattorov, who won the 2025 edition with 7.5/9 and a round to spare, tops the ten-player Masters field. He is joined by Levon Aronian, India's Nihal Sarin, Vasyl Ivanchuk, Michael Adams, Luke McShane, teenager Shreyas Royal and others. Abdusattorov is bidding to become the first player since Carlsen in 2010 to win the event in consecutive years. The total prize fund is £100,000, with £50,000 for the Masters winner, and a separate Challengers event offers its winner a 2027 Masters place.

Why it matters for Asian chess fans

All three events have a strong Asian flavour. Gukesh and Sindarov's title match guarantees an Asian world champion, while Abdusattorov and Sarin carry the continent's hopes in London. With prime-time Malaysian viewing for Geneva and evening sessions from Istanbul, December offers plenty for local fans.
