Lamine Yamal Becomes Youngest Player to Win World Cup and European Championship Double

Lamine Yamal added another entry to his growing list of records on Sunday, becoming the youngest player in history to win both the World Cup and the European Championship after Spain's extra-time victory over Argentina.

At 19 years and six days old, the Barcelona forward first announced himself on the international stage by helping Spain lift the Euros title as a teenager, and has now completed the set with football's biggest prize. The achievement caps a remarkable start to his senior career, in which he has yet to lose a single competitive match for Spain across 28 appearances.

Yamal also became just the fifth teenager to start a World Cup final and finish on the winning side, joining Pele, Giuseppe Bergomi and Kylian Mbappe on that list, with Spain team-mate Pau Cubarsi making it a joint achievement for the two 19-year-olds.

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente praised his young forward's contribution after the match, saying Yamal had "played great football" throughout the tournament. Former England goalkeeper and pundit Joe Hart was similarly effusive, noting that Yamal "stood up to it" when Argentina's defenders repeatedly targeted him physically during the final.

The decisive moment of the match came from a team-mate rather than Yamal himself, with Ferran Torres scoring the only goal of the game in the 106th minute of extra time to seal a 1-0 win. Even so, it was Yamal's calm authority under pressure that set the tone for a Spain side that dominated Argentina from start to finish.
