Bezzecchi wins Indonesian MotoGP as Aprilia take top four and Jorge Martin retakes lead from Marc Marquez
Marco Bezzecchi beat Raul Fernandez by 4.260s at Mandalika as Aprilia filled the top four and Jorge Martin moved two points clear of Marc Marquez.
Marco Bezzecchi won the Indonesian Grand Prix at Mandalika on Sunday, 11 October, leading an Aprilia one-two-three-four. His victory was not the only big result of the afternoon: Jorge Martin finished third and took back the MotoGP championship lead from Marc Marquez, who was sixth only a day after his sprint win had put him on top of the standings for the first time this season.
How the race unfolded
Raul Fernandez started from pole for the first time in his career and kept the lead at Turn 1, holding off Bezzecchi. The Trackhouse Aprilia rider was racing with a broken finger on his right hand after a crash in Saturday's sprint, but he controlled the race for 18 laps.
Bezzecchi made his move on lap 19 of 27, outbraking Fernandez into Turn 1. He pulled away from there and took the chequered flag 4.260 seconds ahead. It was his first grand prix win since May.
Martin had a busy first lap and was only sixth after it, but he reached the podium places by lap three and stayed there to complete a factory Aprilia and Trackhouse one-two-three. Ai Ogura then passed Red Bull KTM's Pedro Acosta to take fourth, making it Aprilia's first top-four lockout in MotoGP. Acosta, who reportedly had tyre pressure problems, was fifth.
Marquez limits the damage
Marc Marquez ran as high as third early on but faded to sixth, 10.778 seconds behind the winner. It was still his first grand prix finish at Mandalika, a track where he has had little luck in the past. His brother Alex Marquez was seventh on the Gresini Ducati, ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio, Fabio Quartararo and Enea Bastianini.
There was a long list of non-finishers. Francesco Bagnaia, Jack Miller and Fermin Aldeguer all crashed out. Toprak Razgatlioglu retired early because of pain from a dislocated shoulder.
What the result means for the title
Marquez went into Sunday four points ahead after winning the sprint. Third place earned Martin 16 points and sixth gave Marquez 10, a swing of six. That leaves the standings like this:
- Jorge Martin: 355 points
- Marc Marquez: 353 points
- Marco Bezzecchi: 309 points
Bezzecchi is now 46 points off the lead, with five rounds left according to race reports. After the race Martin said: "We are still in the fight and still in the lead."
The Indonesian result also shows how strong Aprilia have become. Martin, Bezzecchi, Fernandez and Ogura are all on the RS-GP, so the Noale factory has three riders who can win on any given weekend. Ducati's hopes now rest mainly on Marquez.
Next up: Phillip Island, then Sepang
MotoGP has a weekend off before the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island on 23-25 October. The series then comes to Malaysia for the Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia at Sepang International Circuit from 30 October to 1 November. Entry on the Friday is free for all seating zones, according to the circuit.
With two points between the top two, the title race is likely to be very much alive when the riders reach Sepang. That gives Malaysian fans a strong reason to be at the circuit.
