Miyazono Survives Last-Corner Clash to Win Gran Turismo World Series in Singapore as Subaru's Solis Takes First Win
Japan's Takuma Miyazono won the Nations Cup and Daniel Solis took the Manufacturers Cup for Subaru at the first GT World Series round in Southeast Asia.
The Gran Turismo World Series held its first race weekend in Southeast Asia on Saturday, 3 October, at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. Both main races were decided on the last lap.
Nations Cup: Miyazono holds on
Japanese star Takuma Miyazono won the Nations Cup Grand Final. Spain's Jose Serrano was second and Pol Urra third. A third Spanish driver, Samuel Moreno Baeza, finished fourth.
Traxion.gg reported that Miyazono won with a different strategy from his rivals. He pitted early and ran a long middle stint, which let him finish on hard tyres. Urra was on softer tyres and closed in at the end, but he never found a clean way past.
The win came under scrutiny. At the final corner of the last lap, Miyazono defended against Urra and pushed him into the wall. The stewards took several minutes to look at the incident, then ruled it fair racing and let the result stand.
Pole-sitter Kylian Drumont of France came into Singapore leading the standings. He was given a two-second penalty for contact with other drivers.
The Nations Cup used a new format this round. Qualifying and a sprint race were held at Sportsland Sugo, a 3.586km Japanese circuit making its first appearance in the World Series and in Gran Turismo 7. The Grand Final was raced in the Red Bull X2019 Competition at the reverse layout of Circuit de Sainte-Croix B.
Manufacturers Cup: a first win for Solis
The 20-lap Gr.3 Manufacturers Cup race was held on the reverse full course at Autodrome Lago Maggiore. American Daniel Solis won it for Subaru in the BRZ.
It was Solis's first individual race win in the competition. He had won a title as part of a team before. He nearly lost this one, too. He ran wide at the penultimate turn on the final lap, and Ferrari's Nicolás Arriagada, on soft tyres while Solis was on hards, finished just 0.1 seconds behind.
The top five were:
- Daniel Solis (Subaru)
- Nicolás Arriagada (Ferrari)
- Samuel Cardinal (Mazda)
- Simon Rosenberger (Audi)
- Angel Inostroza (Porsche)
A regional race for Asian drivers
Singapore was also the first event with the Singapore Regional Gran Turismo Cup. This was an on-stage exhibition race for drivers from Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia and Indonesia, who earned their places through a Gran Turismo 7 time trial in August.
All Singapore-based players could enter the time trial. The fastest driver from each of the other six territories, including Malaysia, got a seat at the Sands Theatre. Series producer Kazunari Yamauchi has called it a way to find talented drivers in the region and give them a chance to race on stage. The exhibition was shown only inside the venue, and no results had been published when this article was written.
Next stop: Tokyo
Singapore was the last round before the World Finals in Tokyo on 5 and 6 December. Both the Nations Cup and the Manufacturers Cup titles will be decided there.
Peripherals maker Thrustmaster also used the Singapore event to confirm it is returning as a series partner, and it launched a new wheel bundle at the show.
