Chung Meng-yu Won Karate Bronze on Senshu as Chinese Taipei Added Two Medals in Toyohashi

Chung edged India's Chetan Bhatt on first-point advantage after a one-all draw in the under-eighty-four-kilogramme kumite, while the women's team kata trio also took bronze.

Chinese Taipei added two bronze medals in karate at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on 22 September 2026, through Chung Meng-yu in the men's under-84kg kumite and the women's team kata trio at Toyohashi Gymnasium in Aichi Prefecture.

Chung lost 4-1 to Jordan's Mohammad Al-Jafari in the quarter-finals but returned through the repechage. In his bronze-medal bout against India's Chetan Bhatt, the score finished 1-1, and Chung was awarded the win on senshu, the karate rule that rewards the athlete who scored the first unopposed point.

In the women's team kata, Chien Hui-hsuan, 34, Tien Hsin-erh, 22, and Hung Chih-hsuan, 23, lost 5-0 to Vietnam in the semi-finals before beating Nepal 5-0 to secure bronze. Vietnam went on to win the gold against Iran.

The two medals followed earlier karate bronzes for Chien in the women's individual kata on 20 September and for Shih Cheng-chung in men's kumite on 21 September, meaning Chien now has two medals from the Games.

Chinese Taipei's overall tally stood at eight medals after the day's action, made up of one gold, three silver and four bronze. The karate competition continues at Toyohashi as the Games run on across Aichi and Nagoya.
