Chelsea Confirm Surprise Danny Welbeck Signing From Brighton

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion on a two-year deal, with neither club disclosing the transfer fee. The 35-year-old becomes Chelsea's third summer arrival, following Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and Marco Palestra from Atalanta.

Welbeck arrives off the back of a career-best campaign, having scored 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances for Brighton last season, a return bettered by only three other English players. "When you hear of the interest from Chelsea, it's something that fills you with such immense pride," Welbeck said, describing conversations with manager Xabi Alonso that convinced him to make the move.

The deal marks a departure from Chelsea's recent transfer strategy under their current ownership, which has largely focused on signing younger players since the 2022 takeover. Welbeck's experience and reliability, including a 47.6% conversion rate on big chances last season, second only to Joao Pedro among Chelsea's forward options, offer Alonso a different profile alongside Pedro, Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu and Nicolas Jackson.

Welbeck began his career at Manchester United before a £16m move to Arsenal in 2014, then spent time at Watford ahead of joining Brighton in 2020. Capped 42 times by England with 16 goals, his last international appearance came back in 2018.
