Sixteen teams entered, playing at the Berlin Arena, which holds 14,000, and the Max-Schmeling-Halle, which holds 9,000. The tournament runs 4 to 13 September.
Hosts Germany beat South Korea 94-56 on Tuesday, leading by 17 at half-time, with Marie Gulich scoring 19 and taking five rebounds. Germany had opened the tournament losing to Spain by 30.
Hungary beat Japan 84-63 the same day, Reka Lelik scoring 23 with eight rebounds. It is Hungary's first World Cup quarter-final in forty years.
On Wednesday, Australia beat Italy 82-80 and Puerto Rico played China at the Berlin Arena.
Qualification was split eight to Europe, four to Asia and Oceania, and two each to Africa and the Americas. No Southeast Asian team qualified.
Tip-offs at quarter to six and quarter to nine in Berlin fall at quarter to midnight and quarter to three in the morning in Malaysia and Singapore, which is the least friendly window of any major event this month.
